by james s. on if you come to vanguard on a Friday night you'll find the asian crowd. pretty boys trying to floss their cash on highlighted hair bimbos along with tough guys standing in the corner too cool to dance. if you come to vanguard on a Saturday it's the most poppin' trance/progressive house night in Hollywood. sometimes it gets a little too crowded to the point you can't walk. it's a good venue but i'd really wish they'd stop trying to sell HUGE name dj's like armin and tiesto at this venue. the staff is also really rude. the suits like to power trip. if u get the gueslist located in the back, the girl who checks your name off in back is a bitch! yeah you! the blond one that thinks shes hot! im talking about you bitch! make sure you know what guest list you are on before you get to the front of the line. she is not accommodating what so ever. interesting enough if you go thru the front, you have to dress up dress shoes and all. the back you can wear whatever you want. this logic confuses me....? but on sunday.... at 20 bucks a pop on a Sunday night with no guest list it better be worth it. and it is! if you've come here to stand around and look cool you better get out! people are here to dance! the pros: you can wear whatever is comfortable. excellent DEEP soulful house of marques wyatt that will rock your sox [his set is always a good, he has never let me down] not too crowded but not too empty either. the perfect size crowd. people dance (and not that bump and grind kinda stuff bleh! some people go sober just to dance to marques! wow.) the most consistent night in Hollywood friendly vibe from fellow clubbers the con: the suits it's on a sunday! arg! i try to make it out whenever there is a long weekend. my tradition is whenever i take someone new i buy them a deep t-shirt which is sold inside for around 20 bucks. it supports deep and it also comes in handy because sometimes they give you discounts if you wear it!
by Georgeanna Youst on krippy krawli. this crowd ain winnin no pagents, no. though i suppose if your life revolves around communal bdsm, your options are a tad limited (if not, the only reason to go might be to take a look at the monsters that inhabit this place). its obvious that some people think of it as refuge from the swarms of vanilla sex zombies that await outside. This is fine, but people I interacted with seemed so longing for acceptance, it makes you wonder why. Some kinda circus that never leaves town.
by Tara G. on Love, love, love this venue! So beautiful & historic with an intimate stage and great ambiance. I saw an amazing folk performance there recently and was blown away by the crowd, the space, and the band. I have to admit I was extremely envious of the supper clubbers who obviously knew the way to see a show at the Cafe. They had up-front seating and were served a fine meal & drinks throughout. I also love the fact that my grandma used to take my dad and family there for dinner when they were little... more than 50 years ago! The times may have changed but I'm glad Cafe du Nord hasn't.
