by N G. on I went to the Bossa Nova prix fixe brunch last week with a group of 11ish for my friend's bday ($35). It was a nice, successful gathering, so I have to give SOBs credit for their part. The table was set up, the restaurant was clean and spacious, the service was good, they kept our unlimited pitchers of sangria full, the band surprised my friend with the happy birthday song, and the food was divvied out hot and in a timely manner. I guess the point is that I went with good people and had a good time, so I'm biased. But if I'm being objective, the food was pretty regular, and I wasn't the only at the table who said so. Don't misunderstand, the food wasn't bad. But it wasn't special, a tad bland, and had some high expectations to live up to in terms of reputation and claim (it stated on the menu that the stew was the best in NY). I would recommend going here for the ambiance and for groups. But for 4-star food, probably go elsewhere.
by Miles Tipler on Ok, so, now I've been to the Republican. After years of build up... my friends going there after all the other bars have closed... I've now been there. I see that other people are giving it five star reviews, mainly because it's so awesome that this place exists. I'm going with three, though, mainly because I don't care if I ever go there again. Since my maiden voyage to the Republican, I've been describing it to people as a dive bar that just happens to have a small stage with a mostly nude girl on it who is dancing to whatever is on the jukebox. If the stage were a little further back in the bar, you might not even notice it. Call me naive, but I was expecting the Bada Bing. I got The Dive + a little skin. So, I guess I would go here again if it were 3AM and I didn't want to go home yet, but if I were looking for a strip club experience, this is not where I'd go. In all honesty, though, I might take friends from out of town to the Republican. Ok, now I feel like I should bump it up to four stars. The Republican is both cooler and less cool than it seems. Sorry to be vague, but that's what it boils down to.
by Leland Rogers on I was sad to hear they closed. This was the only sushi place downtown. I loooved their sushi - especially the seared marlin which was only available on special request and only very rarely. But my god was it good. The bartenders were great and the drinks were strong. I wasn't a big fan of the downstairs. I only attempted go there once and there was a $10 cover. This gilrl doesn't pay cover so no go. I'm excited for the reinvention. If the sushi is as good as it was before, I will be back.
