2 beers (that were about a pint and half each)= $5 total 2 shots of tequila (that were a shot and half each)=$10 total AWESOME. It really got me and my friend talking philosophy and life. There are locals in the bar and it's funny because it's right next to Ladder 15 so there's like a bunch of jazzed-up people lingering nearby. If there was a pool table this place would be awesome. In general a good place to just drink a lot for cheap with some friends in your hipster clothes.

I went to school in Santa Cruz. Coming from Los Angeles, my friends and I would always make fun of how "ghetto and local" the bars are up there. Kress reminds me of one of those bars in Santa Cruz... Though Kress is super beautiful inside (in a romatic gothic kind of way) and out (in a Hollywood high-life kind of way), the contrasting images of Kress clashed and the aesthetics didn't create a cohesive enough vibe for me to understand the essence of Kress. Kress gets the RIGHT crowd but I'm afraid it doesn't have enough to offer. The night began with NO parking. My friends and I drove around Hollywood Blvd until we found a back-alley behind Kress for $20. So we pay the parking attendant, and walk toward Kress. As we walk, I feel thousands of pairs of eyes JUDGING my EVERY move (and I'm DEFINITELY NOT a self-conscious person) and already, even before getting into the club, I am irritated. We skip the line because I knew someone at the front and get IDed per usual... ... and then... I have to pay a $30 cover charge because I am a GUY. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?! $30 TO WALK IN THE CLUB? WTFFFF Even still, my girl friend had to pay $20. Sucks to be us. At this point, I am expecting authentic Hollywood, glamour, and fun times. But when I walk in the club, it seems pretty standard. I scan the premises to get a better understanding of the grounds and find myself stuck with a jacket due to an absent coat check. Instead, I fling my jacket behind a couch and trust that no one will steal it (kind of a ghetto move, but it was still there at the end of the night at least! FREE SELF COAT CHECK!) Drinks are expensive and the bartenders are in no hurry to help unfortunately. My bartender was kind of bitchy at first. It took her about 10-15 minutes to serve me my initial drink of the night. But sure enough, after some good tips, a few targeted compliments, and a smile, she gave me a free AMF and told me that I was her favorite customer of the night. The crowd was whatevers, civil at least. Weak-sauce DJ, with no sense of mixing and genres. I'm just so upset it was so dang expensive to experience the emptiness that is Kress.
