Had no clue about this place in the city.  My friend threw her birthday here and hadn't been out with this set of group in a while so i decided to go out and have myself a wild night to top off the thanksgiving weekend. Was a better spot than expected, although the pics from Rateclub made the place look way bigger than real life.  Pretty small place for so many people.  Apparently its a poppn place with how many people rolled through that night. +1 star for plenty of seating if you get there early enough. -1 star for pricey drinks.  $11 dollars for an adios? but gains the +1 star back for making a BOMB ASS adios. Best adios ever tasted. -1/2 star for weird bathroom setups. Or at least if you got the handicap one, the girls waiting in line could see you through the WIDE cracks.  A-W-K-W-A-R-D when you make eye contact of them peakin at you. -1/2 star for the DJ that night.  -___- top 40's mixes plus couple of oldschool mixes which were bomb but he could NOT mix the songs in very well, almost sounding like he was playin it off his ipod song. by. song. Overall, It's a pretty crackin place if youre with good company which i was with.  Girl to guy ratio imo was pretty even while the race was predominately asian..with a couple of African americans which were part of the group i was with..For once it felt nice to be that "black group" in the club and not have to slightly fear them..if you know what i mean. No racism intended. HAHA Would def stop here again without hesitation.

This review only applies to Vessel as a happy hour location. Perhaps it could be a cool club if there was actually music I liked and people dancing to it.  However, after my DYL experience here, I highly doubt I'll ever return to find out. When you walk in, you're greeted by a few dressed-up guys in a large foyer-type room with a coat check (+1). Seems kinda fancy so I half expected the bouncer to charge me a cover. As I went downstairs, I could hear REAL loud house music and came down into a large, dimly lit main room with one bar, lots of comfy lounge seating (+1) and a medium-size dance floor in the middle. I thought it could be cool, but it was so loud that any real conversation was impossible and then they switched to pretty boring and badly mixed top 40 R&B and hip-hop. To make things worse, they then brought on one of the worst and most annoying female "rap" groups I've ever experienced. Some of us ran for cover in the VERY small, poorly ventilated indoor smoking room, but that was somehow worse. On top of all this, the drinks here are pretty expensive (but strong), their wine pours are rather stingy for the price, their tequila selection is pathetic, and not only do they have no beer on tap, but I couldn't find either a display of the bottles they carried or a beer list. Also, there was a waitress serving our big table, but she would only come to deliver one drink, not even bother to really look around or ask if anyone wanted anything else and swiftly take away all glasses that looked abandoned - even half-fulls when there are clearly people around still. To add insult to injury, there was no hook and no shelf in the ladies' stall for my purse (there is only one bathroom with stalls marked by sex) and there was no toilet paper roll - just loose rolls on a shelf almost too high for a little girl like myself to reach - even in 3" heels. Overall, Vessel is pretty pretentious, not that fun and so not a good drinking location. It's expensive, doesn't have what I look for in a bar, apparently hires weak DJs that don't care if absolutely no one is into what they're spinning, doesn't have an actually useable smoking area and I can see how the bathroom situation could quickly get dire as lots of girls imbibe lots of liquids.  That being said, it's an alright spot and I might come back if, say, a friend had a party or someone absolutely awesome was performing here.

After much talk, I finally found myself at Cafe Cocomo's on a Saturday night.  We arrived at 8:30 pm, just in time to catch the end of the their salsa dancing lesson.  (Lessons start at 8 pm.)  With a cover charge of $15, it was crowded and there were more girls than guys at that hour.  We learned two combinations during our brief lesson and I met some 'interesting' characters that evening.  The instructor encourages us to rotate partners (which can be a good and bad thing, depending on if you can stag or not) and is adamant about people watching him before they try on their own. After the lesson, the DJ comes on and the real dancing begins.  Things really start to heat up when the live band comes on around 10 pm and the dance floor gets really crowded, fast.  Initially, with so many more girls than guys, you're not sure if you're going to get asked to dance.  That doesn't seem to be a problem though...and you realize why - there really are A LOT more guys than girls.  So the smart guys who really want to dance, they'll be quick to ask you to dance.  And girls, if you aren't there to dance, then why are you there?  This is a salsa club after all?  Of course, if the guy is a freak, say no!  But, there's nothing more fun than having a good leader spin you around a few times and try a few dance tricks on you that keeps you on your toes and makes the non-dancers wish they were on the floor as well.  Of course, sometimes you just want to catch your breath and watch everyone else on the floor.  It's hard though unless you're standing upstairs, because you will get asked to dance.  (I could barely carry on a conversation with my friend before she was whisked away each time.)  Now I know, if I want to talk or take a break, sit down far from the dance floor. Wearing open toe high heels, I was stepped on plenty (and not by my partner)!  And expect to get a few elbows into the ribs too because, like I said, the dance floor is crowded.  You'll find a bunch of people gathered by the huge fans after each song 'cuz it gets hot in there fast!  I'm still recovering from some cow's stiletto going into my heel, right below the Achilles.  Now, that shit hurt! Salsa dancing is so much fun!  If you've never tried it, take a few lessons and give it a go!  If you don't get it right away, don't think it's because you can't salsa, maybe you just don't mesh well with that partner.  I didn't think I could salsa all that well, but my friend (and other random guys) had me turning this way and that way that it sure FELT like I could salsa! Saturday nights can be intimating for a newbie...I recommend going on a slower night if you want to learn more and you're probably more likely to meet more newbies too.  I would leave the Saturday nights to those who really want to sweat it out. Reminders - (especially during the lessons) please carry breath mints, gum, etc. and use them!  And please share too if you have it.  There's nothing that turns you off more than a guy whose trying to dance with you and his breath reeks! Salsa anyone?
