by Paula M. on I have just read the totally unfair reviews for Mayes for Monday night. I was here for dinner with a girlfriend on Monday night, we were shown to our table by the waitress with the Boston accent. We had just ordered drinks and dinner when we were approached by a couple of dudes, one of whom had approached us on the street outside to "come on in for free food". They insisted that we join in their "meet and greet" but we declined. Our waitress had to ask them twice not to disturb the paying guests. At nine O clock they were calling loudly for more free food from the waitress, who was almost in tears, this farce went on for another hour. This mostly rootless and toothless bunch of freeloaders were having a good night at Mayes expence, wolfing down the free food, seemingly without buying a drink from the bar. Cudos to Mayes two bartenders and waitress for their professional attitude while this farce was going on, I would have called the cops. This was my third trip to Mayes, the seafood, esp the oysters are heavenly, and the Bar and Restaurant are beautifully decorated. We enjoyed our night despite the infestation of the meet and geek people. Just wanted to set the record straight.
by Jeremiah C. on I give XIV 3 stars because they have much room to improve, as I went just after they had opened. As a Michael Mina fan, I wanted to love XIV. Instead it left me with mixed impressions, and confusion. What exactly are they going for? The atmosphere is an interesting mix of bohemian sheik, meets grand drawing room, meets Philippe Starck. It lacks the sophistication and elegance of Michael Mina in San Francisco, but it seems to fit in well with the Los Angeles/Hollywood scene, being more relaxed. The bar is a tight space, placed in an awkward location. The drink prices are sky high. Service in XIV was adequate, I just feel like they need a few more months of being open, to fill in the missing links. All this being said, I can honestly tell you, I can't remember a single dish I ate. With all the distractions, I completely lost any attention to my meal. However, I am going back to XIV in two weeks. I hope to return to rateclubs, with a better review after. We will see.
by Scott Mihalios on This place constantly tries to reinvent itself and become classier, but somehow always attracts the same crowd of sketchy lowlifes...and me, of course. We spent hours upon hours shooting pool here in high school, and the majority of the rating is for their pool special: $15 for 3 hours for 4 people. Sweet. They have a liquor license some of the time, it seems to come and go, despite the same management. But the people working there are pretty laid back, maybe a little too much so (that would explain the liquor license issue!). The food isn't so good as to be worth the price, but the fries are pretty decent and the milkshakes are definitely good stuff. However, Wendy's is just down the block....so maybe it's worth it to eat before or after.
