I have been to Vinotecca twice in the last two weeks. Both visits were good overall, but nothing to write home about. I think Vinotecca's overall atmosphere is one of its highlights. It's a perfect place for a first date. It's generally pretty quiet, has low lighting, feels comfortable (yet upscale), and has lots of places for couples to sit, whether it be at the bar or table. It's also nice because there's no pressure to order food no matter where you sit. The waitstaff allowed us to linger at a table and enjoy our glasses of wine for a few hours without rushing us. This added to the comfort of the environment as well. Later in the evening on the weekends (10pm +), it does get a bit louder, and you can hear bass from the music playing in the attached downstairs nightclub. I found the host to be probably the most helpful staff-member. I watched him accommodate several parties throughout the night. When I walked in and randomly chose a table near the door, he suggested that I move to a different location to avoid the cold draft from the door. Since there were plenty of tables to choose from at that point, I really appreciated that advice. Later, he accommodated a large party of about 10 people with ease and found room for a party of two later in the evening when the restaurant was quite busy. As expected, there are obviously a lot of wines to choose from. I focused on the reds. I wish there were more reasonable ($8 - $9) wines available by the glass in unique varieties such as the tempranillo. I found it odd that the only "by the glass" zinfandel on the menu was $12 or $13 (ouch!). I feel like a wine bar is the perfect place to try a glass of something a bit more unusual that you wouldn't find at other restaurants; on the other hand, a $12 - $13 price tag isn't going to encourage novices to try something new. The wine menu presented in the restaurant is less user-friendly than the wine menu shown online. With the online menu, it's easy to see which wines are available by the glass, carafe and/or bottle. In the restaurant, I saw no mention of a carafe even being an option. This is unfortunate because the online menu states that ordering by the carafe is more economical, giving you a free 1/2 glass. I don't think all of the "by the glass" wines listed online were available in the restaurant either, so don't get your heart set on anything in advance! Don't get me wrong. I like Vinotecca. I think it's a nice place, and I'm sure I'll be back. It just didn't "wow" me like Cork did in Pleasant Ridge.

This place offers an unlikely combination of Ethiopian food and jazz and it works, believe it or not. We walked in there at 8:30 PM wit a group of 5 carrying no reservation-- how inconsiderate of us (we just got out of a movie and spontaneously decided that popcorn had not filled us up.) Even though the place was reasonably full, they seated us right away at a booth. The menu is small but reasonably priced, with some creol-ish dishes added for those afraid of eating food with their fingers. And yes, they do not offer forks and will only bring you one if you ordered off the non-Ethiopian side of menu. The service was quick and the waitress very friendly. We left right around time the jazz show was starting so I cannot comment on the music. Unfortunately have to deduct a star with sub-par honey wine. I have tried my fair share of Ethiopian honey wine and this one tasted like Lipton ice tea mixed with white Zinfandel. Bleh :-(

Saw The Brand New Heavies in here tonight. Which are still the shizzle. Bring back that funky music is all I can say. Wisely, they played lots of stuff from their huge US success, the "Brother Sister" album and some even older and some from their recent CD. Anyways, to the Mezzanine. The acoustics are really bad - it's a concrete shoebox. Besides, despite knowing better I was only ten yards away from the stage and the high freqs almost hurt sometimes. Oh well, that part of our hearing goes first anyway. The set was so hot that they had to fight with feedback at times - and neither the bass drum nor the bass really kicked into my stomach. Found $6 plus tip for a beer slightly overpriced and the only chill-out area was seriously overcrowed. The opening band was called Sutro, alledgedly from The City. But how did a friend put it? "They shouldn't give up their day jobs yet."
