This Sugar Cafe place has a modern look, is spacey...almost spicy... A bartender was spicy too when he said that they are "out of mint" for mojito... If this would happen in Sierra Leone or Burkina Faso, I would get it, but here... in San Fran, I don't get it... If anyone gets it, please get back to me. Overall, the place is nice but the staff doesn't seem to be happy... Perhaps a management (t)issue? In any case, bring your own mint...

I go out quite a bit. Bar-fly, not I, but I make an appearance every now and again (just this side of frequent) to remind people I'm alive and photogenic. Friday 4/24 was the pre-opening VIP Reception for the A-List martini community despite the Grand Opening being the beginning of May. In the space formerly known as Jet and Detour (before my time), owner Greg Bronstein did us a service. Glass entrance leads to an expansive bar room with a circular 360 bar in the middle of the room. It's the first bar in the Castro that really has a sense of open space. Instead of the common red or pink-lit drivel, the Trigger customer is bathed in blue lights perhaps a touch too bright. Lounge seating in alcoves are intimate and almost erotic, so the exhibitionist is and most likely will take advantage of that (Greg tell your security people to be prepared!). A staircase leads upstairs to a glass-plated balcony with silver-cushioned couches and mod-inspired furnishings that try a bit too hard to be vintage 60s. There are bouncers in suits that greet you at the door, a ticket-taker immediately upon entrance, and both male and female bartenders tending bar. Positives: A 360 degree bar means quicker service (we hope) and an opportunity to move around more without a bottleneck occuring. The acoustics are great and the sound system is clear and very functioning. The balcony is a great touch and brings different perspective to the bar scene. I like that Trigger is a step above the dive bars that dot the Castro, bringing a bit of needed class. Negatives: Is Trigger a lounge, a bar, or a club? If you're going to have VIP club members (that cost $500 a piece), why allow just ANYONE in? I didn't wear a suit to an event labeled as VIP and want to see other patrons in jeans and Abercrombie tshirts (side note: Abercrombie is so 2005, yo). I also expect that if a place is striving for class, tell your bartenders to keep their shirts on. Not that I minded, but I can go practically anywhere else to see that. Also, there's a dancing pole in the middle of the bar area behind the bartenders. Keep the go-go boys OUT of Trigger if you in any way want to be considered a step above the rest of the Castro bar scene. Overall, I'm happy Trigger will open. We need a place that be a respite from the dive bars. Just keep it classy...
