by Jane H. on One of the best venues for dancey/dive bar-y fun in the city. No frills, no bullshit, just good events and some outstanding bartenders. (Rachel/Randy/Steve Washington are the bee's knees) Dance platforms and cages galore! BEST KARAOKE IN THE CITY on Wednesday nights. The KJ is fair, awesome and has all sortsa new and obscure items as well as classics. Favorite place to karaoke for sure. 1984 is crowded as all get out and kinda molesty but one of the oldest running 80s clubs around. Thursday nights. Friday/Saturday and even Sunday nights often have really great monthly/bi-monthly events of all sort. Especially for the dark crowd and unpretentious hipsters. Check the homepage for details. by Kyle Coopper on I am still undecided about East Side Show Room. My friends and I walked in last night at 11:55. Our waitress greeted us at 11:58 to say they closed at 12 but didn't want to rush us. So we hurried up and ordered our drinks. We ordered a glass of wine and two cocktails...they all came out in 5 minute increments. First the glass of wine (in a cup that was burning hot from the dishwasher, I am no sommelier but I don't think that is how wine should be served), then one cocktail...and finally mine 15 minutes after they had been "closed". With all the mixology bars popping up in Austin, so far this place is my least favorite but I am willing to go back for another try, this time I will go at 9!
by Renna Jolin on The service was great, the beer was cheap, the peanuts were excellent. What else could you want from your 'local' dive? Its not fancy, particularly clean or smoke free (be prepared) but I like cheap booze and unpretentious people and both can be had at The Local.
