by Rachel H. on I've gone to this place since I came to NYC for college in 1999 and it's great. I've always enjoyed the atmosphere, the poets, and the people. Recently, I've been turned off by the pretentiousness of some of the folk that work there. Yes, this is a cool, chill place but it's supposed to be welcoming to all, right? It was sort of upsetting to me that the Nuyorican has some sort of exclusiveness now. Alas, a little pretentious 'tude won't turn me off because I am all about supporting the poets and the community that the Nuyorican still stands for!
by Kraig Perrell on The food I've had there has been damn good. Their Thursday night, Elements, is stellar, and I've heard good things about Sundays. Some of the staff are really awesome, but I think most of the ones I know have moved on. However, it's a meat market. The weekend DJ plays the same mix 98.5 music with a completely blank look on his face - he could honestly just put the radio on and walk away. I have gotten touched by skeevy guys so many times - and hi, i was wearing a goddamn bruins shirt. i think that's the universal sign for "leave my ass alone". Also, the place seems to regularly exceed capacity - more than just a packed dance floor. Go for the electronic nights or for food, it's worth it. But I'd avoid the weekends, especially if you're female.
