by Jennifer H. on I'm a sucker for a theme party. Last year it was 80's karaoke. This year, midnight masquerade at Carnival. I reserved a table via their events planning group and got some game tickets and premium drink tickets for our group. Nothing worse than having to deal with door sticklers, so we provided a list of our revelers and didn't have to walk any stairs. Our table in the Funhouse? The one by the colorful mural titled "MANEATERS!" So the scene is kinda ghetto but if you have your own, big group, it doesn't really matter. While I tried an alcoholic snow cone, my buddies won stuffed animals playing games (smallest: a Finding Nemo type fish. biggest: a person-sized alligator). We danced, danced, and danced. Next year, I think we're going to "Wig Out."
by Romona Reschke on Probably tied for my favorite place to see live music in SF. A very intimate location, comfortable lighting, lots of reds create a hip feel, and great sound. Plus, they have sooo many good shows (especially when combined with the sister club upstairs). I've seen Cold War Kids here twice, Tapes n' Tapes, Emily Haines, Enon, Britt Daniels from Spoon twice (upstairs both times), John Vanderslice, and countless others. Really - make a point of watching a live show at this great venue.
