This place is just too cute for words, but since I'm a rateclubser I'll give it a try anyway. Read the history blurb on the back of their menu and it will take you down memory lane (well, someone else's memories perhaps unless you're quite old) and you can visualize what it must have once been like to sit at the counter and order a 5 cent ice cream soda (check out the exposed brick with original lettering spelling out these words, just above the menu specials). I adored all the little details in the decor: the vintage light bulbs and uniquely assembled chandeliers, eclectic tables and seating (our table was inlaid with copper pennies), the mantle piece holding a colorful glass vase collection, a back drop of cabaret red curtains behind the piano, and the ornately gilded mirror hanging over the bathroom sink, next to fresh rose petals scattered around a vase of flowers on a pedestal table. The small bar has a big vibe, and I felt immediately in a good mood as I sipped my Moscow Mule (vodka, lime juice and ginger beer) while waiting for my friends to arrive. All classic drinks are only $5 during happy hour and appetizers are half-priced (good incentive to get there before 7 pm). On to the meal. We started with the classic croissants which were perfectly flaky and tasty (and only $2 during happy hour). Then we moved on to the soup of the day, a butternut bisque, which was thick in texture and nicely flavorful although surprising quite spicy! The side salad was a full plate of very fresh greens, beets and blue cheese. My main course with the lamb and goat burger and it was one of the best tasting gourmet burgers I've ever devoured; my only disappointment was that it was not much larger than a slider sized burger. It was accompanied by a sweet potato mash that was a nice alternative to the standard french fries. Having read several previous reviews I was prepared for a long wait despite reservations, and potentially rude and/or snobby staff, but I encountered none of those issues. It is a small place and quite busy, but we were seated right away and our server was responsive and friendly. The chef even came out to speak with several patrons and to ensure we were enjoying our meal.

2 stars may be a bit harsh. but i live and hang out in the East Village...and this place does not belong here..stopped by once on a Saturday night and it was trendy teeny bopper heaven. stopped by again involuntarily last night (Wed) and wasn't so bad. it was kinda dull upstairs but downstairs it was a bit more packed and the DJ kept the dancefloor packed. i was drunk so i had a good time but it's definitely not one of my go-to spots. crowd was a bit diverse, still young, but i'll take that over Euro-trash any day!

I have a secret. Do you promise not to tell anyone...? I LOVE SHOW TUNES!!!!! Ugh. There. I said it. I really do love show tunes. The fact that "Glee" is on in less than an hour is one of the more exciting parts of my week, so you can only imagine my excitement upon learning about Show Tunes Tuesdays at DBar in Dorchester. You mean alcohol and musicals don't exclusively mix at college theater parties? Fantastic. The DJ was wonderful and clearly having a great time bringing the greatest hits of Broadway and beyond. Especially memorable was the tribute to Patrick Swayze with clips from "Dirty Dancing", "To Wong Foo" and "Ghost". Definitely a great blend of old and new - one minute you were watching an SNL musical bit featuring Zac Efron, the next minute Ben Vereen was belting out "Bye Bye Blackbird". Oh. Right. This is also a bar. The drinks were great - neither watered down nor undrinkably alcoholic. The service was fast and friendly, and I was impressed that with such a packed place the servers were still able to expertly deliver drinks without a spill. I plan on returning to DBar for many Show Tunes Tuesdays to come. A wonderful respite for a (now un-closeted) musical theater fan :-)
