by Tennille Jakovac on There's an exciting new trend of bars focusing on and specializing in the lost craft of true mixology, and the most recent addition to the city is Ranstead Room, tucked in an alley just north of Chestnut street. The atmosphere is so dark, red, velvety, and yes, erotic, you won't even notice the almost out of place diner booths or odd bar snack choices for a cocktail bar like tortilla chips and guacamole (El Rey shares the same building). Stephen Starr made excellent use of the Midtown IV's infrastructure when he converted this space into El Rey and the Ranstead Room, giving El Rey a roadside Mexican restaurant feel, and Ranstead Room a cramped, but cozy, speakeasy vibe. I love bartenders who enjoy talking about cocktails, make suggestions, and actually get a kick out of surprising patrons with random cocktails. One of the menu options is in fact, Bartender's Choice, which I almost always get when I stop here. A quick chat about what you like, what the bartender likes, and you meet somewhere in the middle with a great beverage. The last time I was there, I told my bartender I was in the mood for a clever scotch cocktail, and she whipped up a Penicillin...a deliciously medicinal mixture of scotch, honey, ginger, garnished with candied ginger and a spritz of Islay single malt. The perfect compliment to the winter chill descending over the city. Much like Franklin Mortgage, I try to hit this spot on weeknights for a quiet, relaxed, speakeasy scene, but it's just as fun when it's bumpin' on weekends. After noticing the paintings of nude women all over the walls, one forgets he's in a cocktail bar, and not simply having a pre-romp drink in an early 20th century brothel. If only.
by Guillermina Barlow on Ok wow, these Divas know how to work it! You'll be blown away by the ladies of Asia SF and would have never guessed they used to be men! It's a sexy fun spot to go for a special occasion. We came for a gf's birthday and had a hot time. These Divas are true entertainers and make your celebrant feel special! You even get a menu with your name on it. Everything was outstanding, from the service, the show, the food and dancing after. Come prepared to pay $65/person before drinks (20% gratuity adds up!). It's totally worth it though, you get a pre-fix menu and three course meal. The food comes out asian tapas style, all of which are super tasty. The Ahi Tuna Burgers, Ribs & Satay were my favorites.

Deal seekers, hell bent on destroying their livers, that's who! 3rd Floor of course has the $18 AYCD and all the fried chicken, tonkatsu and dokk bokki (rice cake in a spicy sauce) you would care to eat. See Mom? I'm being frugal! (Please disregard the lack of vegetables in this diet, I promise to eat a salad tomorrow). Unfortunately, the food is awful. Dry chicken, soggy tonkatsu, greasy, gross, ugh. In order to make-up for the bad food, one is compelled to drink more to get your money's worth. However, there's diminishing returns with this theory.
