by Edwina Mihalek on Went to see Dar Williams last night. Nice show, pretty good venue. Love the 30's decor and the overall aesthetic - especially the bartenders in classy uniforms. Makes you feel special. I don't like that you apparently have to get to this joint 2 hours before the show to line up before the doors open to have a decent shot at getting a table on the floor. We were seated in the mezzanine in back, and we arrived 30 mins before the show was meant to start. The mezzanine is sufficiently separated from the rest of the rest of the venue so that people feel like it's okay to talk, loudly. Probably fine for Super Diamond, not good when I'm trying to get my soulful singer/songwriter on. But, dear reader, if you want to know the really remarkable thing about what I saw at Bimbo's, please continue. A warning: this really has nothing to do with Bimbo's, but it is perhaps one of the most alarming things I have ever seen in public, and I have to tell my story. In between sets, a guy - totally 'normal looking' san franciscan in plastic glasses and patagonia got up to stretch and stood in front of our table. He proceeded to shove both of his hands in the back of his pants, and - I'm not making this up - fondle his own anus. Literally, a full 3 minutes of explicit ass scratching - it felt like an eternity. We couldn't move, immobilized by the crowd and the general shock.. For the grand finale he takes his hands out of his pants and - wait for it, wait for it. . .yes, of course, he smells his fingers. I didn't believe it happened when he did the right hand, but when he repeated with the left, there was no question about what was going on here. When the date came back from the bathroom, I was just praying that he would be moved by the emotion of the evening and gently caress his partner's face with the back of his hand, but I can't say I saw it. I'm going to bring a video camera everywhere from now on. So to sum: Bimbo's - nice if you get there early and get a table on the floor so that you can avoid being behind people and witnessing emotionally scarring episodes.
