This used to be my favorite bar. Seriously... It was every-evening-after-work-sitting-at-the-bar-alone- with-a-book-and-eating-some -scrumdiddlyumptious-fried-shrimp-and-drinking-tas ty-brew favorite. The food is still really good (though not 5 star good anymore), the drinks are still reasonably priced, and the staff is still nice. But since they added the upstairs, expanded into the building next door and added a brunch, they've become too busy/popular/trendy for their own good. It's still a really fun place to go, especially if you like crowded nightclubs filled to the brim with hipsters and indie-rocker wannabes. But I really miss the simple drunken joy of the old JB's. Oh yeah, the modified Budweiser sign over the juke box made to say "dive bar" no-longer applies. EDIT (May 7, 2008): I just went there last night and found out that the Yard's Philly Pale Ale is now $4.50... that requires me to take away a star. If the rest of Philly starts charging more than $3 for a Yard's, then I will give them their 3 stars back. Maybe not. I doubt I'm going back (unless an awesome band plays a show there).

Ok, I am biased, so take this review with a grain of kosher salt. I am a beer bar guy, a local pub guy, a jeans and t-shirt guy, so Saint just isn't my kind of joint. But when a friend had her birthday gathering there, I was obliged to go, and go I did. The private table area we had helped a bit, as we were somewhat secluded from the annoying looking masses of vapid women wearing odd outfits and throngs of gel haired men in striped shirts, at least 6 of which swung by our area at one time or another to chat up my female friends. The bartenders were very nice and very friendly, which again, probably had more to do with the 7 cute girls in my party than anything, but hey...service was good, so credit where it was due. I never understand bottle service where you can't keep the bottle and pour your own drinks. It seems to defeat the whole purpose. I suppose it saves some trips to the bar, but having the spandex clad eastern-european waitress just standing around waiting to pour for someone every 20 seconds, was a little odd. Not to mention the markup on the bottles is roughly 87609%, but hey...someone needs to pay for that stained glass window over the bar. ANYWAYS, the space is interesting, if not disconnected in style. One room seemed a bit dark and relaxed, while the other looked like it came from the set of Woody Allen's "Sleeper", which was confusing to the senses. Also, the male crowd at Saint could best be described as "date-rapey (tm)", which sounds like a joke made in bad taste, but strangely enough...I think you know exactly what I mean.
