by Midori G. on I am NOT reviewing Mayan as 1) the night club, 2) the salsa club or 3) the Church. I went to Mayan for a live show of Hot Chip with one other friend. He seemed to love the decor and I still can't make up my mind, on one hand, it certainly lives up to it's name, on the other hand it's kind of annoying like the Vegas Strip. As a venue; I like the tiers, amphitheater style on the second floor, bar slightly up from the main floor by the stage, full seating and bar on the top (third) floor. Most importantly though is that the sound and lights were on point with just one feedback snafu. I was a little disappointed to not get a second encore, but I don't think I can fault the Mayan for that.
by Millard Longfellow on I had been having a rough night. I won't go into it all, but suffice it to say, I was left feeling a bit blue on a recent friday evening. My boyfriend and I were walking home from Hayes Valley where we had spent hours at our friend's office trying to save a dying laptop to no avail (oh Lappy, we had so many good memories...sniff, sigh). As we passed Martuni's I suggested a cocktail pick-me-up. Inside was a little piece of heaven. It was a diverse crowd (age, race, sexual o) and the vibe was kind of Free To Be You And Me mixed with Frank Sinatra. We sat at a cute little table with a candle, looked at the enormous bouquet of flowers above the bar, sipped an outstanding Manhattan, and listened to the enthusiastic and occasionally talented singers at the Piano Bar. I left with a spring in my step and a vow to return next time I need a reminder that all is well with the world.
