Came here on labor day, for Taro Hakase's stage. The show itself was awesome, but the place was REALLY packed. I understand it can't be helped to share the table with somebody else when the place gets packed, but this place have a little too many chairs/tables for their actual square footage of the space. Once you sat down at the table, if you are seated on an unlucky seat, you can never move or stand up at all till the end of stage(I know, you shouldn't basically, but still sometimes you have bathroom emergency). Their food and drinks are priced OK, not too pricey, but not so cheap. The service is least attentive. I understand they are super busy with the roomful of guys asking for drinks all night long. But, if so, I wanna ask them to have a couple more people to handle that chaos... Anyway, still good music venue. I'll most likely have to come back here...!

I absolutely loved my short stay at the Independent. I've traveled broadly, stayed at a zillion lux and not-so-lux spots, and worked in the hospitality industry. I haven't had such a wonderful surprise in a long, long time. Not that I expected something bad...just that I'd never heard of this place despite frequent trips to Philly. In short...get there. It's warm, elegant, cool (alarm clock controls your thermostat!), easy (120 channels of Direct TV and free wireless and great coffee in the morning, and granny smith apples), central, and hip. Rooms are neat, beds are luxurious, wonderful stories-high mural worth seeing no matter what. Price more than fair for what you get there. You would think this would be a $400/night spot, and it's not. Stay here. It's wonderfully 'independent' and on par with the highest standards of everything you'd want for business or leisure travel.

Update: Saw my uncle's new gig, the Shane Dwight Band, here a week ago. Good bluesy rock and still like the venue, too. If you want mellow and some space and choice of seats, go to the early set. There was a line out the door for the later set, so it must have been rockin'. Biscuits are delicious (as well they should be), so are the mashed potatoes with a hint of horseradish. Avoid the veggie jambalaya. I tried it this outing and was very disappointed. Weird mix of flavors and unbalanced combo of ingredients -- and not enough rice to blend and give the tomato-veggie stuff texture. It smacked very much of a veggie afterthought, like the chef just doesn't give a damn if there's no meat in it. There's something about live blues music and tasty food that's just good for the soul. I've been here twice to see the JC Smith Band (my uncle plays keyboard and guitar) and had a great time both nights. Fellow veggies can nosh on fried pickles (trust me, they're tasty), the B&B salad (big portion) and delicious mashed potatoes (my choice both times). I think there's a veggie jambalaya, too. The yam fries were also tasty, and non-veg friends liked their meat and fish choices. Nice ambiance with small candles on the tables giving that old-school nightclub vibe, and the stage is small enough that it all feels intimate. Not a lot of room for dancing, which is a small drawback, but it beats watching the band across a cavernous, empty dance floor. The staff was universally polite and friendly. A great time and a nice change if you're tired of the "go stand in a crowded, noisy bar and shout at each other over a DJ" scene. Good choice if you have parents in town to entertain.
