So I went all the way to New York from Boston for a 24-hour stay partly because I wanted to try this place. It's not like I found the fountain of youth or the last Coke can in the desert, but I felt satisfied with Mamajuana. Mamajuana is an interesting place to be in, where as a Dominican you feel both the object of study and the researcher. The thesis could be called something like "the uprising Dominican bourgeoisie of Washington Heights." Definitely Mamajuana is a place of choosing for those who want to be seen in the Heights (nothing wrong with that), so I obliged to their desires and observed. To the more trivial matters... for ~$21 per person you get access to the brunch, which featured mangú (4/5), steak tips (4/5), rice, black beans (4/5), roasted pork (4/5) et alter. Oh, you also get unlimited Jack Daniel's fruit punch that had more of a pink color. I'll come back next time I'm in NYC to taste their dinner menu and also partake in the dancing.

Its a Steven Starr place but hey, I like it. With an innovate food & drink menu set in a trendy atmosphere, what's not to like? Well maybe the prices but what did you expect from a Steven Starr place?

This was my first experience with Ethiopian food and I was excited! I didn't know what to expect! Our party of three decided on the Sampler Delight ($28 for two, $14 each additional person). This included Doro Wat (Tender pieces of chicken gently simmered in a thick red sauce with garlic, ginger, cardamom & onion.); Yebeg Alecha (Savory lamb cooked in a mildly spiced sauce with onions and green peppers.) and the Vegetarian Combination, which is a sample of Yemisser Kir Wat (Pureed split red lentils cooked in berbere sauce.); Yatakelt Kilikil (Fresh vegetables delicately sauteed with peppers, onions, garlic, and ginger.); Gomen (Chopped spiced greens cooked with onions and peppers.); and Kik Alecha (Pureed yellow split peas flavored with green peppers, onions and herbs.) This was served with injera (flat bread) & Ethiopian style salad. First off, if you didn't know...Ethiopian food is eaten with your hands. So, you spend a great deal of time using the injera to pick up the various entrees. As a result, I noticed that I was filling up on injera! This can be good and bad! The food is VERY delicious and you really can't stop eating it. At the same time, the bread starts to expand in your stomach and you realize you're full very fast! Most of the time, I didn't know what I was putting in my mouth, nor did I really care. It all tasted pretty good so I was happy eating. I also had to ask for my small water glass to be refilled numerous of times. At one point, I just asked the waiter to keep the pitcher at my table. I'm a thirsty girl! We didn't get to enjoy any jazz that night as we dined early. But we did get to take a peek into the back to see their set up and I was impressed. I would definitely go back when they are having an event so I can enjoy the live jazz music with my yummy foods. For a party of three, tax and tip included - $66.
