ive been to tao for drinks, but never for food. on sunday night, i came here and tried out the restaurant week din special. i had made a 6:30P reservation, but even with that, had to wait half an hour before seated. at the entrance, the bar downstairs was so packed with a diverse crowd waiting with drinks to be seated for dinner. tao's decor is definitely distinct and grand. three things that stood out to me at the bar downstairs were, the shelf where each bottle had it's own cubbie, the nicely lined up bamboos and the red lanterns. the space itself is quite large and the ceilings are high, making it feel bigger. the giant buddha was also huge - and sometimes the lighting projects 'fishes' onto the buddha - which is cool. there is even a third floor only with a long private dining table. the food was okay, but i prefer buddakan more. i tried out the sea bass and the crusted tuna sashimi. the banana bread pudding at the end was yummy and almost too sweet, but i still ate it all. the food came out quickly after the inital slow start ... and finally, the messages sealed in the chocolate fortune cookies in the end come with messages i think for people who have had a few drinks!

I've had more occasions here than I can count. It's the best spot for a group of people celebrating a birthday or a romantic date for two. The fried chicken, gumbo, jambalaya, and the biscuits are to die for! Tuesday has the in house band and Evelyn Love singing her heart out. I love her.

Heather, If you are reading this, you owe me BIG for making me come here. For starters, there was an $8 cover (not bad at all) then an additional $3 for lessons. The lessons were really basic and the instructor was entertaining and charismatic, but not really a good instructor. There were ~25 people there for classes (22 guys and 3 girls) so of course I had to dance with several guys. I had a positive attitude about it though. The dancers in the class were all beginners and some just had no rhythm at all (three left feet). So after the class, we hit the dance floor before the masses came. We had plenty of room to dance and we got lots of looks and stares as I guess not too many decent dancers come here? I don't claim to be great, but I am decent and the people here (as a whole) are the worst dancers I've ever encountered (perhaps worse than people in the marina doing the honkey hump at eastside west - not even joking around here). As we left here around 4:45 to grab a bite, we got lots of compliments so I was like man, this is a cool spot for an ego boost because it's bad dancers all over. We come back around 6:15 and the place is packed. The dance floor is pretty small to begin with (smaller than Top of the Mark or Mojito in North Beach which are the two smallest dance floors I've salsa danced on). 1/3 of the people are just standing on the dancer floor taking up space, 1/3 of the people are drunk as shit and are bumping into people and stepping on toes, then the rest of the people are honestly just trying to dance. Usually when most people go out salsa dancing, they might bump someone or step on someone but everytime they'll say sorry - not here. Most people here were rude and had no regard for others on the floor. The drinks were cheap and strong which is why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. I've only come here on a salsa Sundays, so maybe it's different other days? =============== For more salsa recommendations: http://www.rateclubs.com/li...
