I've only been for their monthly Mango party, a lesbian t-dance which happens every last Saturday of the month. My initial irritation at having been charged a $5 cover even though I arrived with only an hour to go faded instantly when I saw the scene before me: hot Latin women breaking out the most fabulous dance moves as soul-shakingly loud hip hop spilled forth onto a heated outdoor patio. I grabbed my understandably intimidated gay boyfriend by the hand and worked those last 60 minutes for all they were worth. After last Saturday, Mango easily gets my vote for best lesbian event in the city.

I had the good fortune to visit the Avalon on Saturday, May 12th 2007 for the Porcupine Tree/3 show, and I can say without the slightest hesitation that this is the Greatest Concert Venue in all of Los Angeles. The security was polite and unobtrusive (unlike the Palladium), and the theater itself is the most intimate setting for a performance I have ever witnessed. The beer selection is a little sub-par, as they have no Sam Adams, but I was able to suck it up like a man and order a Newcastle instead for the standard price of seven of your american dollars. The sound was incredible, everything happened on time, and there is not a bad seat in the house. Parking was a joke, as they guided me into the lot and almost flippantly asked for twenty bucks...hahaha, maybe out of towners fall for that shit, but I was able to find a meter a block away for the low, low price of absolutley nothing. The smoking area outside is right outside the stage entrance, so I had band members walking past me, stopping for comment, very nice, very niice. If you have to see a show, rateclubsers, try to do it here!
