The 4 is for the "concert venue" aspect of Avalon. If I were to rate the "nightclub/bar" portion of Avalon, my rating would be a 2. I was here with a group to see Miguel Migs spin some groovalicious deep house jamz. I hadn't been here since it was the Palace, and now I remember why. Even though I got right in, I saw all the poor schlubs who had to wait in the ridiculously long line to get in and deal with the douchebag doorguy who was pissed off that he didn't get called back for Toughguy #3 on The Shield. SO glad I didn't have to deal with his ass for long. We rolled in to the foyer area and took it all in. The place was already jammin, and the DJ right before Miguel Migs was still on. We were thinking about getting a table, but they wanted to charge us an outlandish 4 bottles to sit there. F that noise! We decided to chill at the bar and wait for M.M. to come on. Overall, the vibe was pretty good crowd-wise. My biggest beef with Avalon is their staff. The only cool guy was the bartender, but that was only b/c my boy hooked him up with a PHAT tip in advance. The doorguy was a prick, the table service guy was an ass, and even one of the waitresses was a biotch, rudely pushing her way through the throngs of people at the bar without so much as an "excuse me" much less an "I'm sorry." Enough ranting, now to the good stuff! Since one of my pals was as big as a Mac Truck, once M.M. started spinning, he bulldozed his way up to the front of the stage and I just stayed right behind him. We saw the whole set up front and I gotta say ,it was pure MAGIC! The sound system at Avalon is the shiz niggity, the lighting was transcendent, and I had a phenomenal time. Great place to see a show, lousy place if you just wanna hang out and drink and get treated well by the staff.

Some people prefer to order Chinese takeout or delivery and eat it in the comfort of their own home.  Others might prefer to eat the same food in a gigantic space surrounded by beautiful people while watching out for celebrities.  If you fall into the latter category, TAO just might be the place for you. Am I exaggerating?  Ok, maybe just a bit.  TAO's Pan-Asian cuisine is far more varied and of higher quality than typical Chinese takeout.  In fact, I've never tried anything at TAO that I didn't like.  But the reality of TAO's food is that it is not anything special as one can easily find similar dishes of the same or higher quality at their local Thai, Japanese or Chinese hole in the wall for half the price. So why do so many people go to TAO?  First, the atmosphere at TAO is top notch.  The multi-level room, anchored by a two-story statue of Buddha, is magnificent and full of energy.  Everywhere you look there are packs of beautiful, trendy people smiling the night away as down-tempo electronica blares through the restaurant's sound system.  More than likely there will be at least one celebrity or local athlete in the room.  In addition, the drinks are pure bliss provided you enjoy sake or are a sucker for fruity cocktails (like me). Basically, TAO is great if you are looking for a fun night out or a side of people watching to go along with your meal.  It is also a great spot for large groups as you'd be hard pressed to find a bad dish or have a bad time.  Just don't go there purely for the food or you may end up wishing you had reached for your favorite delivery menu instead of making the trip over to East 58th.
