by Sharita Ouelette on A little "Night at the Roxbury-esque" no? This was not the place to bring boyfriend for his first DYL. Thieves Taverns, or some other delightfully divey bar should have been his first DYL, but I was impatient for him to see what all the fuss was about. Instead I think rateclub sufficiently scared the crap out of him. Going to an L.A. nightclub before the sun goes down in San Francisco is an odd sensation...like stealing back your treasures from the teacher who confiscated them the week before. It feels naughty, yet luxurious at the same time. I think the space is absolutely beautiful. The exposed brick is so very, and the cushy, overstuffed chairs were a treat for our rumps. It's a little to mod for my taste, but I was impressed none-the-less. I think this place would be fabulous for a private affair...maybe because if it wasn't for a rateclub event I wouldn't be caught dead with the regular crowd here. At first it took a while to get some drinks, but after I forked over my card and moved from the high maintenance, and far too salty, dirty martini to beers, the bartender was like putty in my hands. I'd glance at him from across the room and he'd have a beer unscrewed and ready for me in 2.5 seconds whether I wanted it or not. He also memorized my last name so he didn't have to keep checking my tab. The bar snacks were perhaps my favorite part about the place. If you want to know the key to my heart, give me a milk jug of oversized corn nuts. Why do I love them so? Well besides the obvious salt obsession, I really appreciate the shape of the container holding the little treasures. It allows you full access to the treats without having to dip your hands into the mix, thus allowing for less pee and germs to contaminate the fine nuts. The smoking room...um frightening. Like Darth Vader's office. No chairs, no windows, no plants. Just a shiny black room with an ashtray and a vent. Perhaps even more frightening, the bathrooms. Whoever thought that the sounds of chirping birds is relaxing while you pee is obviously doing a whole bunch of speed. The bathroom, like the smoking room is shiny and black and like a terrifying, treeless forest you can't escape. Final consensus. I don't hate the place. The bartenders were friendly (at least to me), the space is chic, the music is innovative and modern yet relaxing, the corn nuts rock my world...but $52 for four beers and two cocktails is a little steep for my dwindling bank account, it's a little to shi shi for my taste, and the bathroom haunts my dreams.
