"Meet me at 20th and Ranstead.  15 Minutes.  I need your help." Click. Her voice was as smooth as smooth peanut butter being spread over an english muffin that already had margarine placed on it earlier(which is ridiculously smooth).  I lit a cigarette and hurried out the door like a man rushing out the door because he just got a phone call from someone who he thinks might be ridiculously attractive. I approached the corner and saw a beautiful woman waiting alone, her gaze slowly searching the shadows for a man who she just called for help.  When our eyes met, my heart revved up from a beat to a drum roll.  It felt like my ribs were going to crack and my chest was going to burst like those poor saps in the Alien movies. "Thank goodness you came." She whispered, her lips so close to my ears that you'd need an electron microscope to see the space in between.  "Let's go." She took me by the hand and led me down Ranstead street.  Before I knew it, she'd opened a seemingly random door and I found myself in the kind of bar that the suits in city hall like to bring their mistresses to.  Low lights, candles, soft jazz, small mirrors, and wall paintings really brought the room together.  The decorative elements melded together like a Beethoven symphony and it was at that moment I knew it was going to be a long night. "Why are you shaking?" She asked, her hand still grasping mine like our palms had been fused together in a horrible science experiment gone wrong. "Are you cold?" "No." I replied. "That was my pulse sending you a message in morse code." -- The place is like the Franklin Mortgage except it serves some food, has a less impressive drink menu, and has a more elaborate ambiance.  It ain't cheap but you're paying a premium for: 1. The decoration 2. The excellent service 3. The ability to sit down 4. The ability to hear yourself talk to the company you are with. The drinks are good.  I recommend going with bartender's choice because it allows them to put something more creative together than what you'll see on the standard menu.  The Ranstead Room is not a large place and once word spreads about it, it will probably have a long line and lose quite a bit of its charm.  That being said, it is definitely worth checking out soon.

My 1st time and my last time - I went for the Native Tongues party and as a Black woman from New York who grew up with Tribe  and De La I had high expectations. No amount of alcohol will make me forget that I requested Bonita Applebaum and after waiting for an hour gave up.The club was barely full when I requested it and having a "dj" who was playing from a laptop and not MIXING anything tell me he would 'get around to it' just sounded funny to me - and not in a good way. Now back to the alcohol. I came with a friend. We were there for a little over 2 hours and had 2 drinks and split a pizza. We have jobs to go to in the morning after all. There were two bartenders working, one male and one female. We had a very nice patron sitting next to us that we struck up a conversation with who was friends with the female bartender who had ordered the pizza that we all eventually split. I personally saw the female bartender down 4 shots with that patron. As a former nightclub promoter that sort of thing would've been a big no-no in any of my venues but hey I'm not the owner and as long as you handle your sh*t I'm not gonna judge. But...I put our last round on my credit card and after flagging for someone for nearly 10 minutes to close out my tab I got a bill for $20. When we'd paid cash our drinks were $6 each. There were words exchanged between bartenders and the guy gave me a new bill for $13 as he insisted the drink I'd ordered was $7. It's nearly midnight and I'm bored because the living jukebox downstairs played mostly J Dilla [RIP] but crappy stuff and finally started playing Tribe but selections from Love Movement - come on!!! I want the classics: Bonita, Award Tour, etc. I didn't even have a buzz to tide me over. On top of that I had to pay a $5 cover charge! And here's what I really don't appreciate. As a Black woman why is it that when I have a legit grievance over lack of professionalism do I get treated as if I am causing a problem? I did not raise my voice or behave in anything other than a professional manner, but I will DEFINATELY let a business or entity know when I am not receiving satisfactory service. It is my hard-earned money and time spent that I can not get back when there are so many other venues and ways I could put my resources to better use. I wasn't going to say anything but my friend commented that the look on my face was obvious at how disappointed I was with the evening. SO this is an opportunity for this lovely establishment to address my complaint. And I am checking my credit card for erroneous charges as I asked to see the first slip voided out and was 'assured' that it had been, but was not given a copy. As if I'd trust those bartenders!
