by Jane Lampshire on Very disappointed, but this place is still pretty good. I'd like to give it 4 stars (I'd probably get yelled at by my brother and his friends for not giving it 5) but there was something not that welcoming about this place first off and second - the food just wasn't that great. Yes, the tacos and the other appetizers were great and the drink menu is pretty good. But, who puts a pork dish on the menu and then cooks it Medium Rare without asking. That's absolutely disgusting. Sorry fancy places, lately, the whole medium rare thing leaves me angry and disappointed. Yuk. Pink Pork. It was called "the other white meat" for a reason. Too bad too, but I probably won't come back here. I don't have $40 to spend on a couple drinks and an undercooked meal.
by Mike D. on The Improv is the best of the mainstream comedy clubs in Los Angeles and consistently books a better show than any other 2-drink minimum type of place. An overwhelming share of the best comedians in the country live in Los Angeles, and many happily pop in here for a quick set. Jimmy Pardo, Louis CK, Sarah Silverman, Marc Maron, Greg Fitzsimmons and Doug Benson all make it here on the regular (sometimes on the same night). Have a little patience, though, because they do book their share of hacks. Midweeks with a bad headliner can be unbearable. Also sucking is their food, the aforementioned minimum ad the specter of a Carlos Mencia taking over the entire night. But at its best, this can be an electric, exciting sort of place. I've seen Chris Rock make a surprise performance. I'll let you in on a secret though, the UCB Theatre gets nearly all of the better Improv comics (more often, too), is BYOB with no item minimum and never charges more than $8 a show. The only tourists there are those making a respectful privilege. There is also zero chance of a Dane Cook or Dat Phan surprise performance.
