by Rubye Smail on I was wandering around the city in search of a hole in the wall with good food, when I happened upon the menu display at D'Jango. Jason bounded out of the restaurant and urged me to try it. I couldn't really resist his encouragement and entered the fairly empty establishment. While it's menu describes it as a gypsy kitchen and saloon, D'Jango looks like a somewhat hip yet oddly decorated college bar. The panel TV at the end of the bar was showing Top Chef, while the exposed brick and stone wall next to my table housed what looked like decorated coconuts and hands sporting finger puppets. My table and the others in the restaurant were heavily lacquered and surrounded by cream colored molded plastic modern chairs. The long wooden bar was lined with red stained wood chairs. Eclectic describes not only the decor but also D'Jango's menu. I started off with warm sourdough rolls and salad that included what I think were pickled radishes. Although the salad had more dressing than I prefer, it was good and huge! I sampled the butternut squash soup next. It was very rich, and I could have done without the oil that was on top. Finally, I followed that with fried plantains. These were heavenly. There was just enough powdered sugar and whipped cream garnishing the plate. The texture was perfect, soft and warm. All the while, Jason was attentive but not overbearing. I'm happy that his good nature lured me into the unique restaurant that serves up some Southern specialties with a trendy twist.
