by LA F. on I was in the area...I heard it was good and I read on rateclubs that it had a good happy hour so, friday night we made a u-turn into the parking lot. it was 7:30pm. The sign read "free valet from 5-8pm" cool, we thought...cause my boyfriend and I just got off from work and met there - so we had two cars with us. we walk in...the bar which could fit 20 seats had 10 bar stools and were filled up by locals. we walked into the main dining room and there were 2 other tables. we sat down and 15 min later we were the only ones in the dining room area. we figure it was because people were there for happy hour and it was about to end. But it was Friday night? where was everyone? We ordered Chicken fajitas and the Chile Colorade Burrito. The fajitas were as good as el torito and the the burrito had meat in it that tasted like it was bad quality...grizzle and such. The chips were good until near the middle of the basket, it had a stale oil taste. Then we were approached by the mariachi band. They asked us if we wanted to hear a song... we said sure. And the guy said, it's $10 and started playing. I think it's in bad taste for the manager of the restaurant to allow this to happen. It makes the dining experience uncomfortable. Like you got suckered into something. Anyway, we listened to the dumb song and then we ate our food and downed our margaritas and left. The margaritas are a decent price during happy hour but they are not the best. They leave an after taste of soap....pre-mixed stuff. Then we get outside to get out cars and the valet guy charged us $10 for 2 cars. $5 per car. What happened to free valet between 5-8? you have to get there after 5 and leave before 8. Good business move. Even the restaurants on Restaruant Row in Beverly Hills don't charge that. It all made sense....people were rushing out of the dining area before 8 so they didnt get hit with the $5 for valet...ah, got it....too bad there won't be a next time. I'd rather go to taco bell. save your money and go to sunset blvd in echo park to el compadres
by Francis Macina on This is a great neighborhood spot!! Early in the week there is no door cover, but there still is the $15 bar or $20 Table (per person) drink/food min. The door cover resumes as the week wears on. Some great talent plays here. It's also VERY VERY SMALL. So, don't hesitate to hop onto http://www.opentable.comand make yourself a reservation...otherwise you will end up waiting in the line that forms outside most every night! UPDATE: March 2008 Smoke serves food now (has for some months but wanted to test it out before adding this.) Food was good - music - GREAT!!!
