So I come to find out that my roomie (the ultra suave Matthew S.) didn't enjoy his dining experience here... I, myself, have never eaten at Club Waziema (and after reading Matt's review I won't - which is fine, as I'm not a fan of Ethiopian food, anyhow) - but, I did have cocktails there with a friend several weeks ago and would like to say that it is as a dive bar that Club Waziema excels. There were cheap, strong drinks, fast service, seats at the bar, it was not so loud so that I had to shout to enjoy my conversation with my companion and the jukebox selection was most excellent. Not to mention that you can pet the wallpaper... fuzzy! While I'm sure it's a one-star restaurant (as I trust Matthew S.'s epicurean opinions)... it is a four star dive bar. So, I say go - don't order any food - enjoy the dive bar atmosphere, pet the wallpaper.

Let it be said, first, that I go to the Phoenix Landing for their electronic music nights. I don't really go for the food (never had it, actually), nor for the drinks (they're pretty cheap, so I have no complaints). I go to hear high quality electronic music, and to dance. The offerings, music-wise, on Wednesday (tension--breakbeat, etc.) and Sunday nights (bump--house/electronic) are fabulous. The cover rarely exceeds $5, and the crowd is always enthusiastic. There's also room for dancing, once the tables are moved out of the way. The downsides to the Phoenix are mostly aesthetic. The space is not particularly attractive, though it's not hideous, either. There's room enough for maneuvering through the crowd, and space away from the floor to sit down. The bar is pretty easily accessible. The ventilation, however, is not so good. Subtle odors of bleach and beer have wafted past my nose on occasion--though I'm more sensitive than most to these kinds of things. However, such flaws can be forgiven. The focus at the Phoenix is on the music--and they deliver in that respect. If you're looking for a sleek and sexy bar experience, this isn't really the place to try. But you're guaranteed a friendly and appreciative crowd, and superb music. *The Phoenix does themed dancing nights throughout the week, which I haven't attended; however, I'd imagine the mood is similar.
