I've seen many a wonderful show here including: Peter Bjorn & John (last night in fact), Pinback, Broken Social Scene, Stars and Enon - and I'm returning soon to see the National. It was also the site of my law school's graduation party. Great sound, great vibe, lots of history - you can't help but love it.
by Ned Cedano on i would gvie this place -20 stars if a could my boyfriend and i are big jazz fans. hes a jazz guitarist. we like jazz. we go there to see jazz one night. just hte mediocre robert stewart experience. we pay the cover. we go in and sit. the rude waitress came over and told us that there was also a 2 drink minimum. we were like....uhhh well we arent 21 so we cant buy drinks, we will buy desserts. she said no. we must order a drink. so we go back out to the front and tell the person we want our cover back and that we are leaving. SHE FLAT OUT SAYS WE CANT HAVE OUR COVERS BACK. WE HAVENT EVEN BEEN IN THE ESTABLISHMENT FOR 3 MINUTES. the first indication these people are unproffessional greedy assholes. we tell her we cant buy drinks because we arent old enough and she says, oh well, you must buy something. so we decide to have dinner, because then we wouldnt have to spend any money inside hte jazz club which would have cost us 2/3 of a dinner for some stupid cola. the front person tells us if we have dinner she will give us our covers back. we sit down and eat their incredibly mediocre food which is waaaay overpriced. we finish eating, and the women comes over with our covers and says this. "ACTUALLY YOU CANT GO IN AND SEE THE JAZZ BECAUSE YOU ARENT 21. BUT HERES YOUR COVERS BACK." ok i hope at this point you fully comprehend what has just happened. she has tricked us into buying food at the restaurant knowing FULL WELL they were never going to let us into the jazz club. at this point i am fucking IRATE. i ask for hte manager and blah blahblah, telling them that the women completely failed to card us initially, then told us we could go in if we bought food, then we boughthte crappy food, then we were told we couldnt go in at all!!! finially after all that the bartenter in the club comes out and says we could go but we "couldnt buy drinks". NO FUCKIGN KIDDING!!! WE WERE THE ONES WHO TOLD YOUUU WE COULDNT BUY DRINKS. they should have just given our covers back when we told them we werent old enough to drink!!! in heinsight i should have called hte police and demanded the money for the food back. if i would have threatened that, they would have probably been a little nicer seeing as how they didnt even freakin CARD us before entering and tried to serve us alcohol before we told them we werent old enough. THIS PLACE IS JUST BAD AND RUDE. their musical acts are mediocre, and so is their food. thats probably why every time ive gone there only been 1 table full of the 15.
