by Dina Artzer on A seriously long time ago I used to bartend here. It was only for several months but I spent some of the funnest evenings of my life here, and after hours around town. Not only was the money good but I got to see some of the best acts in the World / Latino / Caribbean music scene right there, live, for free. Gilberto Gil, Djavan, Mighty Sparrow, Hugh Masakela, Samba bands, Cuban bands, Calypso. It was a very hot club in those days and I am pleased to see that it is still in existence. I met some great people there and am glad to say that one is still a good friend to this day. The food at the time was Brasilian-Cuban, it was good, it was free, and so was the booze. And every once in a while I jumped on the dance floor and samba'd my a** off! When we closed down at 4 PM, at least once a week it was "after hours" somewhere in Tribeca or NoHo. Frank Sinatra called NY the city that never sleeps for a reason. I haven't been back in many, many years but according to the reviews, it still is happening. Next time I hit the Big Apple, I'm there.
