by Shayna Mani on 420 REVIEWS, DUUUUDE. I ended up at Sugar Cafe because the wifi in my apartment has the weakest signal ever and it takes 45 minutes just to load rateclub. How pathetic is that? Anyway, Sugar Cafe is near me home and I'd been meaning to check it out for awhile. I like it there. I always hated that cafes that weren't chains had to look shitty (there are exceptions) and have unclean bathrooms, even if it totally makes sense because the majority of patrons pay $1.25 to sip coffee for hours on end (where's the profit in that?). It's really nice to be able to hang out in a cafe that was smart enough to invest in chic interiors so that their space could double as a night club. Plus, now I can drink wine with my coffee because they obviously have their wine and beer license. That is awesome. The ceilings are tall, the space is vast, and even though there are technically no partitions, there are three main seating areas. The front has the street (and best) views. You can be sipping your double non fat mocha while you watch the Academy of Art students frolic about. There are also three (or was it four?) rather large loveseats (still not a sofa!) that separate the tables in the windows from the barista station. These sofas are comfortable and right next to the posh looking electric fireplace. Very cozy. The back area is better for larger groups, and I can see where that'd be "the spot" at night time. I've only had a chance to go during the day, but I really like it. I don't want to check it out at night, as the crowd outside always seems to be a bit too Marina for me. Maybe someday!
by Jennifer C. on I'm just gonna go ahead and say that this is one of the weirdest bars I have ever been to. It is like community center meets midwestern dive. Pluses - really comfortable couches, super nice bartender lady, 1.50 PBR, rad juke box, two pool tables, NEVER crowded. Minuses - its just f*)(^*)* weird. Go there to see for yourself. There are dudes in there seriously sporting handlebars and mullets...'nuff said.
