by Jackie G. on This bar has the most random crowd...I guess it's because of its location which is kind of in the middle of the Mission, Castro, Hayes Valley and near the Orpheum. I was here once before on a weeknight and it was pretty mellow. We sat in the back by the piano bar and the guy played and sang Elton John and Billy Joel songs. I just recently went on a Saturday and it was a totally different vibe. We ordered $10 dirty martinis and they were WAY too dirty. The people watching was great though. Unfortunately the front room is much bigger than the back room and when you're in the front you can't even hear the piano player. It would almost make more sense to just make it into one big room.
by Warren Lovvorn on Amazing entertainment, cool yet friendly vibe, and even places to stand and sit down where you can have an actual non-shouting conversation. This place is perfection, the only nightlife type place in LA where I've been fully satisfied. Elyse K's review is dead on what I felt about the place so I'll just ditto what she said and add a bit more color. Personally I am a novice when it comes to nightlife in this city, so when an old friend was in town with a night to spare I sheepishly had to turn to google and citypages for ideas. Decided on this place because it 1) sounded interesting and 2) was not in Hollywood (it was a Saturday and the night before Oscars and I didn't want to deal with all that). There's not much nearby to speak of - we found street parking on the same block immediately. There was also a lot there if I remember right. We got in there and immediately after walking in, I was stoked to see that the place was well-populated but not packed to the gills. That perfect happy spot between "Not Enough People So Kind Of Lame" and "Sardine-like and Horrible Where You Are Constantly Catching Elbows and Jockeying For Space". The decor of the place is great. Thematic yet it felt sincere, esp considering that they did it up like that because of the history of the address itself. Before we could see what was going on, we could hear the band playing. It was an 8 piece swing band, and they were SMOKING. SO GOOD. I play sax myself and am a bit of a snob, and I REALLY REALLY ENJOYED THESE GUYS. Even if the venue sucked hard I'd go there again just to see them play. I give them 9 out of 10 with two points off for the singer having a really unnecessary and lame zoot suit but one point given back for having a kickass rhythm guitar instead of a piano. I don't know the name of the band but it was a Saturday night and hopefully they're regulars here. And as others have mentioned, the stage is gorgeous. I would kill to be a musician playing on that stage just for the photos you'd get out of it. To top it all off, the semi closed-off rooms on the side actually had seats that would empty out once in a while. I was able to sit down with an old friend to have an actual catch-up conversation in an awesome bar with great music playing in the background. This is my ideal place, I highly recommend it for a night out with some friends, and it's definitely worth a drive across town to get there. I just hope the vibe stays as is. Please keep your fratboy/fratgirl/nightclub-scenester type friends away from here, thanks.
