by Cade P. on Yay! I'm a fan. This dive is a great find. It's not as small as the shotgun bar it first appears to be. There's a nice open patio with gas heaters built in, covered seating and a little stage area. Around the corner of the back patio is another stage inside. We checked out a great group called Fiction Like Candy. Wow--they were great. The beer is plentiful and so are the choices. The bar staff ranges from surly to sweet--but all are endearing. Did I mention the table shuffleboard? Hellllz yeah!
by Vivian Garlow on Ahhh--Trudy's Texas Star Cafe near campus. What can I say? Early 1980's; never been to Austin. Lady friend takes me out for a "tex-mex" dinner, whatever that is. I had no idea. Well, 5-6 Corona's (it was only available in Texas in those days) and a platter of fajitas later (NO ONE outside of Texas had every heard of fajitas in those days) I was in love. Twice! Bought and (imagine this today) took 2 cases of Corona's home on the plane--they were thin cardboard 20-packs in those days--fit one under each arm and walked onto the plane with nary a sideways look--stuffed them under the seats in front of me (they just fit), and held the very first full-blown, dress-up as a Texan Corona and Fajita party in Boca Raton the next Saturday. Thank you Trudys and to the nameless lady friend D, (protect the innocent!). Not sure if it is as good as it used to be, but I can tell you that for a virgin like I was, I will never forget the experience nor will my friends in FL who came to the party.
