by Suzanne G. on I took my mother and her friends here when they came to visit. I wanted a nice, trendy, but not super-touristy place for dinner in Midtown, and Tao ended up being the perfect spot. My mother and her friends loved it! I made reservations on http://Opentable.comand we were seated as soon as we arrived. I forgot to request an upstairs table, but we ended up getting one anyway. The waiter was very nice and extremely knowledgeable. The food was excellent- I had the wasabi-encrusted fillet that was cooked to perfection! This place is a little over-hyped, but it was a great place for an out-of-town group. I normally frequent hole-in-the-wall places, but Tao was a pleasant step out of the box for me. It will probably become my staple "guest" restaurant!
by Isidro Gradel on It's a little out-of-the-way... tucked on a side street by a bridge. You kind of have to know how to get there. It's not really hard to find, but it will easier the second time. The interior is amazing. Think RED! Think surrealistic Victorian bordello meets Salvador Dali meets Mardi Gras meets Satan's VIP room. We went last night to see a favorite band, Stewboss. http://www.myspace.com... OK, the place isn't jumpin' on a Tuesday evening so it's hard to give a fair review. The atmosphere is interesting and fun. The bartender is sexy and personable. She also offered a good suggestion on a bottle of wine. (from the list of two reds/two whites... all $27 per bottle.) There are little alcoves and side rooms that lend themselves to sexy peccadillos, raised tables for those who like to watch, and a good-sized floor. It looks like it would be a really fun place on a busy night. We'd certainly go back.
