by Alva Woodend on I walked into the Sugar Cafe and thought "they're going to get overrun in about a week". Why more people haven't found this place yet I don't know, but it can't last. However it was blissfully quiet on a Monday night and Liz S. and I thoroughly enjoyed our semi-private club. The space is beautiful in that modern-retro way, with curving ceilings and a teal/brown/cream/rosy stone color palette. The clean-lined, ultra modern fireplace dominates the front room and provides a sort of "I'm at the hippest ski lodge in the world" vibe. The food (nibbles and dessert) was all well executed and cleverly presented. We ended up requesting more bread, which was cheerfully provided and one of the owners came over to discuss our request (they're working out some kinks in portion sizes). Dessert was delicious and HUGE. I was very startled by the lack of wine --- they only have 2 white wine offerings at the moment and no reds. I got the sense that will change soon, but it was still disconcerting to only have a sauvignon blanc or a reisling as options. A full bar menu is available, however. Here's where I get serious though. Sugar Cafe IS going to get overrun. It has a wonderful vibe, a great space and it's in that TrendyNob area that's becoming so popular. I got the sense, however, that the owners haven't quite clued into the fact that they actually opened the doors to a bar. Or that they're serious novices in the business. Cases in point: *We had to get up from our wonderfully comfy leather slipper chairs and order at the bar for EVERYTHING. Every drink. Every food offering. Extra bread. At times we were outnumbered by the staff and yet the very nice, pleasant bartender would not come over to see if we needed anything else, even when our glasses were clearly empty. She cleared glasses but didn't ask if we wanted more. *The space is very sleek, modern and frankly gorgeous, yet with the exception of the bartender everyone else who was visibly an employee was dressed extremely casually. The gentleman who brought our food and the nice woman who came and cleared our plates were both dressed in gym clothes. Sweatpants, tank tops and tennis shoes. It was 8:00 pm in a swanky bar --- why were they dressed for a workout? I want them to do well. I really do --- this is a place that deserves to do well. But I got the feeling that it hadn't really hit the owners yet that they've opened a place that is going to attract a sophisticated, demanding and fun-loving clientele. If they don't figure that out, that clientele is going to run over them like a steamroller and leave them bleeding in the dust.
