by Angelena Laun on By day, Sugar is a mild-mannered cafe with coffee, free wireless and delicious baked goods (made on premises). By night, the lights go down, the fire heats up, and you can have a drink or ten while listening to some chill tunes and kicking back on a comfortable sofa or bench seat. I visited this new soon-to-be-hot spot with Suzanne B.on Monday night, and we had a lovely time. The interior is gorgeous (see photos) - like a casual hipster cousin to the St. Regis. For the two or so hours that we were there, we could not help but wonder why this place has not been overtaken by the crowds - I say it's lack of advertising. The web site tells you virtually nothing. I want them to do well, but I have to say I loved the quiet of having a limited amount of patrons scattered throughout the large space. They offer a small plates and dessert menu, and I was impressed by the food. We shared the cheese plate, 3 dips, and dates wrapped in bacon - all delicious. The cheese plate presentation was inspired - using a chocolate chip/dried cherry/walnut mix as a bed for the cheeses was unexpected and wonderful. Do NOT skip dessert. As I mentioned, everything here is baked on premises. We shared the sweet potato tart, which was buttery, rich and big. I had 2 gimlets which were pretty good - but I would like to see what "house" cocktails they come up with once they create the drink menu. This place is just begging for one, and I was surprised that they didn't have it since they had obviously spent time on the food menu. Sugar is still new, and they still have to work out their minor growing pains. However, the people there were really, really nice and open to our comments, which is a good sign. One very cool thing that they do is put out the day's leftover baked goods on the bar so you can take whatever you want - for breakfast the next day or an impromptu snack. I know that I'll be back soon and probably repeatedly - after all, a girl needs a Sugar fix from time to time.
by duane m. on Met up with some friends at O'Terrills on a Friday night, and there was definitely a welcoming vibe from the place. I am not 100%, but I am pretty sure one of the owners came over and gave us beads. That was pretty cool. The place it self is located on busy Piedmont Rd, and the parking is extremely scarce. It was scary parking my car on Piedmont, but a few beers inside made me forget about it. They also had live music, which was, well, interesting, but for such a small place, it was honestly just too loud. We ended up leaving shortly after the music started because it was impeding our ability to talk to one another. As for the food, most of my friends seemed pretty pleased, but I was told the buffalo chicken wrap "didn't taste right". The prices were pretty decent for food, but were actually a little high for booze. If you are looking for an Irish place to hang out, then you may want to check it out; but get there early so you can park on the lot, and not have to worry about your car sitting on Piedmont.
