If only I didn't have a moral conflict with sleeping away my weekend days, I would make Rise a more frequent part of my Fri/Sat night repertoire. I wasn't about to pass up the opportunity to hit up the elusive Rise afterparty. I have a quasi-secret love for the unst-unst music, but I hate dealing with the typical sweaty, drunken messes at crowded clubs. At Rise, I felt unthreatened and free to socialize or dance without keeping an eye out for wandering sketchballs. Both floors are clean, full but not overcrowded, and offer chic lounge space. The massive leather couch is great for recharging and people watching, but you can't go to Rise and just sit there without getting antsy. The third floor hosts this surreal purple haze dance party, and while I could do without the round mirrors everywhere, it's all about the music. Check out Rise, but a Red Bull or 3 might help if you aren't used to the whole dance-til-dawn thing.

Apparently Rain has taken over the realm of hotties in Austin, but I find the same people, looking exactly the same here, with more room to move around, a larger dance floor, and bustling outside patio. Senior bartender Steve is probably the most amazing bartender in Austin, always remembers what you drink, gets it to you in seconds, and has the quickest comebacks to any queens who throw him attitude. AND he throws a very successful and well-received fund raiser he puts on every year for Project Transitions...the man cares about people. In the back is Jeff, the nicest tall glass of water, and although the back bathroom is a sauna on summer nights, apparently guys and girls use it without fear, and tend to start random conversations. When there's a line at Rain, go to Oil Can's..when there's not, I'd still start an evening off here.
