by James D. on I think I'm biased, because I came to see the Vespa Experiment (a tour of Brendan James, Jason Reeves, and Amber Rubarth), and Brendan James is my hero... Best part? The stage was small and you could stand right up against it. I probably could have grabbed Brendan's hands off the piano, or tackled Jason and Amber before they had a chance to gasp...and risk being thrown out of the club of course...but still, the thought did cross my mind. Great intimate atmosphere, all around, friendly service, free water that is OBVIOUS (finally!), and a pool table to pass the time. Plus, I glanced at the menu, and it's so cheap for a music venue! If it's as good as the Cafe and Cafe Du Nord next door, next stop I'll have to have a bite.
by Laine Bolinger on First of all, I like places where I don't have to look up where it is or how to get there when someone tells me where we're going. 111 Minna is an art gallery and a cafe and a nightclub. As a gallery, it's alright; The stuff hanging is vibrant and colorful but there isn't a whole lot of variety. As a nightclub the crowd struck me as young and a little obnoxious and silly but it's fun and unpretentious, and the bartenders appear to know what they're doing and hey! tallboys of Sapporo! Normally I only drink Sapporo with sushi, but in a big silver 24 ounce can I can get my huge beer on without feeling like a gutterpunk and the can itself speaks to my deep seated love of bright shiny objects. The acoustics aren't so great but the DJ seemed to know what he was doing. It's been ages since I've heard a good dancehall/ragga DJ but I may just not be going to the right places. My friends and favorites appear to either love or hate this place; It seems like the kind of place you'll love on one night and hate on another.
