I used to come here all the time when I first moved to San Francisco and I didn't find myself so much older than the college age crowd here. Came here the other night just for nostalgic purposes and hot damn if it wasn't the same dj, same tunes, same mix of drunken construction workers and USF kids. It was like coming home again. Four stars.

Bimbo's and Robin Williams... Two San Francisco institutions almost too much to handle for one evening... First Bimbo's- How could I have let this treasure pass by- I have heard about their music venues and swing dance band parties- but did not consider it as a hot spot till now! I love everything about this place- the space is inviting, intimate and yet social... It was inviting because of the cozy atmosphere- dark red hues with dimly lit lamps, curvaceous banquets along the walls where tete a tete conversations can be had- and social for sharing tables with complete strangers eager to know more about you :-) The welcome parlor leads to the grand hall and the accommodating spacious bar. The bartenders looked spiffy and attentive, hair perfectly coiffed with pomade and immaculate white jackets...I was enthralled...this might have been my first coquettish encounter with a bartender ;-) I believe the drinks were well made regardless of a wink, tip or smile...I wish I could find them at every bar :-) Before the show started- I made a quick visit to the ladies lavatory- to powder zee nose and retouch the 'do...I was pleasantly greeted by a lady attendant- who welcomed me to a free stall... and after washing my hands she graciously handed me the tissues to dry my hands- it certainly brought back the era of complimentary service- I took a mint and left my thanks in the tip jar :-) I did not want this evening to ever end... So now to Mr. Robin Williams... I think he made a wonderful choice to present his musings for "Working on Material" here. He was engaging from the start- I dont think I ever laughed so much- I had an endorphin overdose... A comedian of his stature- shows his 'observation' on social, political ,racial and gender issues with his own interpretation- and the result was this hilarious, truthful and uplifting spirit- that makes us all laugh at 'him' and ourselves. His genius continues with his enigmatic and charismatic characterizations of his subject matters. I found a new appreciation for him far from his fictitious acting in movies. At the end - for an encore- we were treated by his past interpretations- and yes Mork too :-) I believe this is not material for his show- this is a venue- of a one man show- which success will follow wherever he goes. He did not need our blessings...but thank you again Mr. WIlliams for a wonderful night- Bimbo's like Apollo approves. PS. The proceeds of the shows went to Seacology and Doctors without Borders... PSPS- the bday is coming soon...and ABBA tribute band on July 27th WILL make this my place to celebrate :-)
