This place has its ups and downs. Situated in the lobby of the Culver Hotel, the large room with many small areas of seating is great for quiet conversation. The super high ceilings and reproductions of tasteful classic paintings give this place some swankiness. This goes a long way for me. I can't stand not being able to hear myself talk, let alone my pub-mate. The crowd is really good -- a big mix of all kinds of people. Hotel guests, hipsters, students, 40 something academic types, studio people, pretty women who appreciate the vintage environment. It hasn't been invaded by jerks or turned into a pseudo nightclub with blaring music. All pluses in my book. The bad parts have been mentioned in other reviews -- the drinks are too expensive and kind of crappy to boot. The wine selection is appalling. Worse yet, if you pay by credit card, the bartender has to leave the bar (and all the customers there turn to you and sneer because there is only 1 bartender) and go into the closed restaurant on the other side of the building to run the credit card. It is pretty ridiculous how easy it would be to fix this place's biggest problems but yet they haven't done anything about it yet.

Forget Zeitgeist - it's too crowded and overdiscovered. El Rio and Wild Side West have the best outdoor beer gardens in town. El Rio is my favorite: super cheap drinks, spacious and sweet outdoor beer garden area (peppered with flowers and citrus trees and plenty of seating), and great event nights. If you get bored easily, they also have a separate room with a dancefloor, a pool table, and even shuffleboard. BIG SECRET: FREE BBQ and OYSTERS ON FRIDAYS (just remember to tip)! i was happily surprised.
