by steven c. on Tasty and fun. I went on a Tuesday evening, and there was a nice crowd. The music was a little bit loud, and the lighting was constantly adjusted, but those are the kind of things I tend to notice. I had the tartar burger, and it was great, with a side of onion rings that were a notch above standard. I appreciated that they put the milkshake in two smaller glasses when you say you are going to split a milkshake. I will probably go back here.
by Katie W. on I just went here for the first time, also because I had just come out of a movie at the Tara (I think it might do well in this capacity). Rain is a lovely little spot. In addition to the main dining are, it has a pleasant waiting area/lounge-y sort of area when you first come in with low tables and cushy leather chairs. We did not stay to eat in this area but I did notice it and I think they were bringing food to people seated at these tables, too. They had takeout menus when we came in which we had looked over but when we got to the table and got our real dinner menus they had fewer selections than the takeout menus had. However, they did let us order from the takeout menu, too, which was nice. The food was very good. I had the lemongrass soup (tom yum soup) and the Penang chicken curry. The soup was less spicy then I would have liked, although I am sure that I could ask them next time to make it spicier. It had a nice flavor which a few big shrimp and nice big mushrooms. The Penang chicken was great - I devoured it. I actually stopped myself halfway through with the intention of taking the rest to go but then I couldn't resist and went ahead and ate it all. It has a really nice curry flavor with lots of chicken, green beans, bell peppers and what I think were big chunks of pumpkin (the pumpkin was excellent - it really made the dish). Someone dining with me had the sushi and he said it was very salty. I did not try it so I cannot confirm this. He still ate it. All the dishes were very nicely presented. The service was good, with just a few hiccups, and all the staff was very friendly and nice. We got menus right away and they came to take orders quickly but it took a long time to get drinks, including water. Once we had drinks, they kept on top of the refills and we never had to ask. They did have a really small wine list (I did not order wine, however). I like this place and would like to try it again since I enjoyed my meal so much. It is awfully convenient to the Tara theater and is a great choice if you are dining before or after a movie.
by Samual Wiggins on I'm pretty surprised to see such a large and expensive venue in San Francisco. While I don't know a lot about contemporary jazz or about Yoshi's in general, I have to say that I was pretty impressed. I came here for drinks after dinner at Fresca's a couple blocks away on Filmore. This side of Filmore is a bit seedier though, which makes Yoshi's a welcome sight. Despite the tacky AMC theaterish entry hall, on the inside, you're welcomed by two grand floors of wining and dining. The tall ceilings and rich decor are a lot to take in at once. Everything from the green tea vodka to the Isamu Noguchi coffee tables exude an modern taste with a touch of Asian flavor. On a Tuesday night it was pretty slow, there weren't any live acts playing and we didn't try any of the food. But as a comfortable lounge, Yoshi's delivered. I'd definitely like to come back here when it's a little more poppin'. And when I mean poppin', I mean a happening crowd with some live music. Not gunshots ringing in the street.
