This is a good place to grab a business or casual lunch in the heart of Midtown - they have both indoor and outdoor seating, and validated parking across the street for $2 (up to 2 hours max). However, besides the seating options, the food here is very typical. I ordered their Buffalo shrimp Caesar salad, which was average - I found the shrimp not to be very crispy (though it is breaded and deep fried, then tossed in buffalo sauce). The lettuce and dressing were fine, but certainly this is not a dish that went well together - I would just get regular breaded shrimp next time. Prices are okay - about $12 for the salad, which is probably on the pricier side for lunch. Service was average.

From the dark wood, buttoned down booth seats to the waiters scurrying about in their crisp whites, the restaurant buzzed with excited competence. I was delighted to hear the sounds of the chairman of the board and the rest of the rat pack playing deliberately in my ear. The faux china was a nice juxtaposition to the red and white checkered picnic tablecloth that back dropped our meal. The black and white photos lent a kind of history to the place that while contrived, completed a moment in almost any Italian restaurant that is unfamiliar to most Texans. Our waiter was a skilled fellow with a calm demeanor. He informed us of the specials and the willingness of a chef who would be happy to address any food allergy needs. He was knowledgeable and relaxed and patient. I didn't get the same vibe from the table next to ours. Their waitress seemed tired and frustrated. Our guy was named Jason, he would take good care of you. You could say I know a guy... The food was good, and could have approached fantastic. The bread and oil lacked a bit of originality with no herbs floating in the olive oil/ vinaigrette. This was not enough for me to care much since it's not meant to wow me, only satiate. I tried the signature Maggiano's salad with crispy prosciutto, red onions and Gorgonzola. It was a perfect apology for the bread. For my main course, I had the balsamic glazed Salmon with a side of Italian orzo. My only recommendation is they should add a little parmesan or pecorino to an otherwise fresh dish of orzo mixed with neutral peppers, onions, green olives, pine nuts and arugula. Sometimes the healthy choice falls a little flat without the tang of some cheese. The Salmon was served on cedar. It was delicate and cooked perfectly with a sweet and tart glaze that I would love to attempt at home. I tried my sweeties lasagna and look forward to her leftovers if I can wrangle them from her. :-) The dessert list was very nice. It came complete with a page of cordials and ports as well as brandys and cognacs. I am fairly certain this is fast becoming the norm and to this I say bravo. I opted for the white godiva cordial and was happy when I received a little more than I thought was coming to me. The miniature desserts (also hopefully becoming a norm) were great to see, and all my sweetheart needed to satisfy her sweet tooth. I have listed all the things that I like, and to be fair I should talk about a couple of things that I wasn't too thrilled about. Firstly, the smell of a sour mop is bad but not a deal breaker. Mops can be washed and the water changed, but be aware that if the smell is there when you go, you should say something. It was not my experience, but I noticed a lot of people waiting for a while for a table. My advice, grow up and eat your meals during early bird hours, you will be happier and healthier, but I know not everyone can do this. The size of this restaurant took me aback, but I was quickly drawn back down to a more humane scale by a skilled waitperson and home style decor that reminded me why they had named it little Italy. Some of the details reminded me a bit of a theme restaurant at a casino, too commercial, but they are doing high volume... If they have a pitfall it might be that they are attempting too much with the space albeit ample. I will be fair and call them a good step in the right direction for Austin's Italian food restaurant list.
