I had been so excited to check out the new Yoshi's on Fillmore so when my friend told me she was having her birthday dinner there recently, I jumped for glee. However, my jump for glee turned into a slouch once we saw the small portion sizes and especially when we got the bill. As my friends looked at the check, 80% of them had to go outside to smoke a cig and let bill reality sink in. First of all, I was in awe by the restaurant's interior. It was a sight to behold! No matter how square or nerdy you are, once you step foot in here, your street cred goes up a couple hundred points. We sat in a huge booth with bamboo bars attached to the ceiling. Whoever designed the place is definitely on the hip tip. Our waitress was very friendly but almost bored us to death after her 15 minute reply when we asked her what she recommended. What she recommended to our party of 8 was that we order family style which I nixed immediately once I saw the price of the dishes and the fact that she recommended we order at least two each. After excommunicating myself from the family and receiving my usual title of being a cheap ass, I settled with ordering the spicy geisha and banzai roll. Note: best thing I had was the edamame for $6. Phenomenal! My friends ordered a bunch of other shit including the half chicken which ended up being delicious because it was moist and flavorful. Flava Flav would have been proud. I didn't really pay much attention to what else they ordered but I did taste their dessert donuts which were wonderful and had some sort of creamy dip. The satisfaction after eating good food was short-lived after we got the bill. Our bill for 8 people was pushing $500 so that meant 6 family members paid $72 each and the little cheapskate estranged sister paid $34 for 1.5 rolls, a beer, tip, and some edamame. I would go to the restaurant again but not with a big group. Not only did most of us leave broke but we were still hungry and almost headed to Johnny Rockets up the street afterwards. I'm sure the jazz club is great (I've been to the one in Oakland) so if you are going with a friend or a date to see a show, I would recommend checking out the restaurant... if not for the food then for the impressive decor.

Soul night which is usually on the 2nd Saturday of every month is a shitload of fun. There is great music and a wonderful mix of nice, happy dancing people. A good time most definetly.
