Came here a couple of weeks back for a Friend's birthday party. It was kinda blah, didn't really impress me. Mind you we came for drinks (the dinner menu was a little too ritzy for our pocketbooks if you catch my drift). Therefore, my review is strictly based on the "late night" drinking experience. First off, I have to admit I did enjoy the ambiance. They did a good job creating a nice decor. However, my temporary enjoyment was soon overshadowed by the sheer abundance of old (and I mean OLD), skeevy European men. I do not think I have ever seen so many men with tight jeans and greasy, slicked back hair (Pat Riley style) in one central location. I was nervous if I made eye-contact with any of them they would attack. I so desperately wanted to run for the hills, but my friends pleaded with me to give it a chance. So I gave it a chance, but was undoubtedly left unsatisfied. The drinks were expensive (as per usual NYC nightclub standard). The music was this weird tribal, eclectic mix - not my cup of tea, but to each his own. The crowd as I stated before was beyond horrific. The only positive was that we did get to take some pretty awesome pics rubbing the belly of the Buddha - the most action any of us got for the night. In sum, if you're looking for a chill spot with a crowd of attractive 20-30 year olds keep Buddha Bar off your list!

It was Saturday around midnight, we had no destinations in mind, nowhere to go, nothing to do, no possibility of being rejected by random girls. And to top off the misery--I was completely sober at the time. The $9 long island I'd had earlier in the night did nothing to remove me from my shell, and I ended up wishing I'd had stayed at home with my new soon to be antiquated HD-DVD player instead, On a whim then we decided to join a b-day celebration of a friend of a friend at this Vertigo which I'd never heard of before.  Drinks, dancing, no cover charge?  I'm there. We parked, showed our IDs, I downed a few drinks ($6 for J&C's, $3 for classy Bud Lights)..and was ready to bust out my penguin dance on the energetic, disco inspired dance floor. As we walk toward where the action was, my friend behind me notices some girls at a table on the side pointing over, whispering something to each other, and right as I pass them apparently one of them pushes the other toward me, which results in a grab of my overly sized posterior. I turn around thinking it was my friend ready to punch him in the balls until I notice a group of suspicious looking, giggling adolescents sitting at a table beside me. I look down and just as I was about to lecture them on the inappropriateness of such behavior in this equal opportunistic world that we live in and how far they've set the women's civil rights movement back and preach on about why they should vote for Hilary, they all point toward one girl. One thing leads to another and the next thing I know one of the girls asks, "do you want to go to Mexico, we're planning on going soon?" I reply "Uh...isn't that a kind of far?" "No not really." "Okay I'm down." All in all it turned a dull hopeless night into one that inspired a review, and that says a lot. It won't be a major destination point any time soon, but it's a good enough answer for those nights when someone asks "so what do you want to do?" It's a much improved answer over say, Holy Cow. Five stars for such an effort, and mostly because I generally like to rate on the extreme levels.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the Phoenix Hotel/Bambuddha Lounge. My husband and I got married there - we rented out the hotel for the weekend and filled it with friends and family. I'm sure people don't really think *wedding* when thinking of the Phoenix, but the courtyard was actually very tranquil and beautiful and made a fantastic wedding site, and the Bambuddha Lounge was an amazing venue for the the reception/dinner, etc. We highly recommend the Phoenix/Bambuddha as a unique/non-traditional SF wedding/reception site.
