by Cristina K. on Two years ago, the food at Taverna Plaka was pretty decent. I went back to last month with this idea and experienced very small and expensive portions. I noticed right as I opened the menu that the items and their descriptions seemed awfully familiar. I asked the waiter "Is this the same menu as that at Avra Greek Tavern* in Midtown?" He hesitated, and said yes, that the two restaurants were under the same management. At this moment, I should have RAN AWAY. And I would have left at that instant, if I were not with a group of friends. The mezze were much smaller than I remember them (and they are already supposed to be small). The entree was also small at $15, and had no memorable taste or texture. They seem to go crazy with the vinegar/lemon juice, but other than that, everything was dull tasting. The only reason I would ever go back is to dance with friends (a section of Taverna Plaka is a club). Luckily, we were entertained by a talented belly dancer who distracted me for a while from a ridiculous rip-off of an evening. * refer to my review of Avra Greek Tavern.
by Hue Knowiton on It's hard to say what I think about Icon... It's not BAD really... it's just completely unimpressive. It's the most generic club, with the most generic decor and the most average drinks. The crowd is average in the sense that it's neither sceny nor thuggish, again, it's hard to say anything definite. I wouldn't come here again because Icon did NOTHING for me. I like to have some impression when I leave a place - lukewarm just doesn't do it for me! I'd rather hate it violently, and leave feeling that I had an experience.
