In true rateclubs fashion, my recent move to Austin has begun by eating my way through the city....do I have a place to live? Is my stuff here? Have I even unpacked my car? That's a negatory to all of the above..but heck, I'm already out and about, and loving what Austin has to offer...... When the rateclubs CM Kelly sent out an email saying "free tickets to an event" I decided it beat a random bar/club, so with tickets in hand I headed over to the 91.7 KOOP silent charity benefit event at Antone's Nightclub. Antone's will get a review in due time, but the real standout to me beyond the great music was some of the food vendors that participated. Keeping Austin Sweet was there supporting the event, and had an array of delicious bites for people to try....what would I call them....they were like 2 bite cakes with a semi firm chocolate firm frosting on it - (it wasn't fondant, it wasn't dipped / drizzled chocolate).....whatever it was, it was freaking GOOD. The cake itself: one chocolate, one a spice cake, one with white frosting, one with chocolate frosting. Both to die for. Before turning my attention back to the music after my foodgasm, I watched a few people walk up and literally put these little cakes in their pockets....trying to stash as many of them as possible before they disappeared and the little bites were just a fond memory of the night. It reminded me of how Alice (you know...the one in Wonderland) would put the "Eat Me" cake in her pocket to save for later.... I don't have any cakes in my pocket, but like Alice, just in case I need some cake, I now know where to go. Keeping Austin Sweet, thanks for the sweet beginning! (Note to why 4 instead of 5 stars - When I order a full cake from Kathleen, and can comment on the full ordering /price / service process I'll edit the review at that point)

I think this place is pretty chill. Its a nice place away from all the downtown traffic and parking issues that happen to explode around happy hour time. They offer half off their pizza's from 5-7 which is great, especially if you plan on sharing with others. I like getting the beer, $4.75 for a Dos Equis, which I don't think is too shabby...unless it just appears that its bigger than it really is because the glass is so large. It could easily be one beer in which case it might not be as good of a deal as I thought. Either way, its a nice place to have a drink, offers a funky atmosphere and I will definitely go there again. So far all the bartenders have been pretty friendly too, so thats always a plus. It's getting a bit old to go to a cool bar in Austin and have the bartenders think they are cooler than thou and treat you like crap.

I am a gay man, yet I love this fabulous straight bar. The decor is really wonderful. I love the black wallpaper, black antler chandelier, and photo tables (courtesy of Merkley??? who I adore), and the animal print chairs. Sounds crazy and funky, and yes it is. LOVE IT! The crowd may be older, but what bar downtown doesn't have that. Beer on tap was $3 when I went at 8...that's great.
