by Garrett P. on The first DJ that a friend used to turn me on to electronic music was Bad Boy Bill, followed by Richard Humpty Vission. One of the things that he would tell me to listen to was how quickly these guys could mix, in other words going from one song, and then within less than a minute setting up the next record, matching beats and finding a good spot to drop it in. Turns out, this takes a lot of talent. I don't think their house DJ has it like that. These days most of these guys are using hard drive stored music and laptops with programs on them that help them match the beats. It helps, sure, and it makes anyone capable of mixing songs at a breakneck speed, but I think they've missed the point.. If you're playing a good song (read: people are dancing), then you don't have to show off to yourself by flipping songs every 45 seconds. It's ok. We're not at an ADHD convention, and your audience isn't a bunch of 7 year old boys who've been given 2 lattes. Sit back, create a groove and keep dropping beats. But don't assault anyone with them. Also, the bouncers seem way less douche-y here than at neighboring spots, though the drinks are equally ridiculous in price. Then they autograt you regardless of how much you ordered/spent.
by Smita P. on I find myself going back to "One Midtown Kitchen" a lot. Ive tried all the other's in the group including Two Urban Licks, Trois, Pie bar (now closed) but "One" is my favorite. Why -- Wine bar, appetizer list, service, price This time I went with Dad and we sat in the Outdoor (new) patio glass enclosed section. It was very nice. I've never been let down. Service is truly exceptional! Ambiance is cool. Could get loud -- thats the only downside. But I'm ok with busy, bustling cheery restaurants. The wine bar is one of a kind extending from floor to ceiling. My favorites on the menu -- Goat cheese (baked in sourdough) is my top choice, followed by the lamb ribs, meat and cheese, Calamari & mussels. I have to mention their amazing wine selection and the "bottomless" offering. Alhough, I'm usually happy at the 2nd or 3rd glass so have never really opted for the bottomless glass! Try it out!
