Stayed at the Independent with 3 friends and were extremely satisfied! Got in for a great price, the room was more than enough space, and the bathroom was just as spacious. Continental breakfast was great - they have a great spread in the lobby! Walking distance to a lot of major sites. I would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and anyone looking for a boutique hotel in Philly.

One of the worst clubs I've been to. Once we got in the bouncer immediately directed us into the basement, make it rather seem that we weren't allowed into the main area. We figured that the headliner we were there for would be thusly playing in the basement. Truth be told this was a lie, while attempting to find the smoking area we found that access to the main room was not limited and LTJ Bukem was about to go up. Many areas in the place are "reserved" but without any sort of significant sign-age. We were asked (personally I thought rudely) that we weren't allowed to sit where we were at and then were directed to a much more unappealing lounge area. As noted before, the smoking patio is just a fenced off portion of the parking lot in the back. Drinks were also rather over priced, as was the cover. Their sound system was a bit too much for the space. There's this math you do, bass less then pain in head, and bass in head = bass in chest. The basement rooms were not acousticly sound (pun intended) at all. Going up into the main room you'll find there's way too much sound for the area. Everyone in my group after about an hour wanted to leave due to the fact that our heads were hurting, and at the same time the general vibration of the place was wrecking our bodies. If you're a creature of the night whom likes to prowl the first 3 blocks of SOMA, enjoys crap-tastic pricey bars, dolls up to go out dancing and wants to hang out in a claustrophobic underground cave, check this place out. I.e. welcome to a highly lucrative commercial venue land.

I've had great concert experiences seeing The Sounds, Beck, and Elbow at this venue. The lighting is beautiful, but the layout is a bit haphazard, probably because it was originally a restaurant that they made into a peformance space. Just don't buy any drinks--because they are SUPERexpensive. Yikes. And the doormen can be 100% unhelpful and will make you wait outside while others get to bypass the line because they know the bouncers. I still haven't figured that out. But as a venue itself, it's nice...but not better than Bowery Ballroom.
