If ever there needed to be a pictorial example to illustrate the phrase, "questionable decisions," the mental images burned into my brain from a night at Clermont would take top prize.

It's back -- Silk City Lounge. I recently attended their Thursday night "Mo Money Mo Problems" dance party. It was fun, but I've got a bone to pick. "Mo Money Mo Problems" is a 90s Hip-hop dance party. Sounds like a good idea right? Yeah, it is. I should know. I came up with it. Some friend of mine and I have been DJing a 90s Party at Sal's for months now. Someone reading this will obviously point out that I have a personal bone to pick. They'd be right. But come on, you have to concede that it's lame that they couldn't come up with their own idea. I'll readily admit that Steven Bloodbath, their DJ, is a better technical DJ than we are. But, his play list was less than inspiring and the hip-hop got old after a while. Mix it up a bit too. I'm as big of a Wu-Tang fan as the next person, but you should see what happens when you drop some Gin Blossoms. Ironic cheesiness gets you a long way in the hipster scene. Trust me, the kids will love. And speaking of Wu-Tang, please...."stop biting our shit." Thank you. Ps. And can someone please let me know where there's a dance party that plays good music and isn't filled with the same five hipsters? Thanks.

This is a relative review. Relative because I am not a clubby kinda girl. But I thought I'd check Harlot out because it was the second week it had been open, and everyone said it was different, and I knew someone who knew someone and was promised I would not have to stand in a long-ass line waiting to get into a club, feeling miserable about myself. So while my tendancy is to rate these places on the lower end of the absolute audrey scale, I'm an open-minded chick and on the relative clubby scale, Harlot does score some points. First off the decor actually has some flair to it. The NY-wannabe modern minimalist look is so overdone. Come on SF clubs, let's get some character, some diversity! Represent your awesome, unique, free-thinking city! While I can't say the giant paintings of multi-racial harlots on the walls delivers on that cry for diversity, I can at least say that the effect was evocative. Second, the entrance is pretty neat. Not the valet-only massive parking lot outside, but the convenient coat check and swank smoking room just inside makes you feel like the owners put some thought into what their patrons might need. Even though I don't smoke, the coat check was a nice touch. And third, it's a small space but it doesn't seem crammed. It feels like you've walked into a SOMA loft converted into a bordello. It almost feels intimate which I thought was near impossilbe for a club. On the down side, the hip-hop-ish music was quite crap that night, and the people were extra pretentious, even for a club. And no, I don't like being stared down at by "VIPs" in the balcony. Really guys, that's just creepy.
