El Rio is a very cool (if not somewhat difficult to find) bar in the lower mission area. We went there last night for drinks, and between the pool table inside, the decently-priced drinks, and the large courtyard in the back, it's got to be one of the best dive bars I've seen in San Francisco. If you're down to just have a conversation with somebody or relax in the cool San Francisco air, give this place a shot.

Went here last night (a Friday) and loved it. Technically it was not "Boom Boom Room" because it wasn't in nightclub mode. It was in cocktail lounge mode which our waitress referred to as just "The 18th Floor." (Our waitress told us they usually are open as a lounge until 9, then close until 10 and reopen as a nightclub, but that summer they were closed as a nightclub and therefore had extended the lounge hours until 10.) The decor was kinda like Metropolis meets the Wizard of Oz (if the Emerald City were done in golds, that is). Add in a little Barbarella, and The Jetsons for good measure. I absolutely loved it. It was the most amazing view I have ever seen in the city. Let me say that again: IT WAS THE MOST AMAZING VIEW I HAVE EVER SEEN IN THE CITY. It would have made a very romantic date spot. Date and I each had a cocktail. He had a 'rita and I had a signature cocktail called "I Kissed a Girl." The were both just okay. But then we ordered strawberries which we saw some others enjoying - fresh sliced strawberries with real whipped cream and a crystalized sugar lattice dome covering the stemmed glass they were served in. Truly yummy and perfect. Bill was about $65, but the view was worth it - I swear. Loved the Dante-on-acid plasma screen art in the elevator. But how did I miss the much talked about bathrooms? Shame on us! Server was model-gorgeous and aloof at first, then turned normal and sweet once we befriended her. Crowd was mixed and probably not cool enough for the surroundings. I was surprised there was no dress code (my date had on jeans... we went right in). We left only because they were closing. I'd love to go back.

The Good: 1) Decor - The restaurant is named XIV because it is both Mina's 14th restaurant and is decorated in the Louis XIV style. Beautiful. 2) Scottish Mule cocktail - Hendricks, Cucumber and Lime, if I remember correctly. Tasty. 3) My husband's entree, the signature Lobster Pot Pie. Decadent The Bad: 1)Timing of Service - They were bringing out the next course before we had finished the previous one. The wait staff literally tried to pull half-eaten appetizers out from underneath several in our party's raised forks in order to serve our entrees. No clue. What a bunch of bumbling monkeys. 2) The price of the Lobster Pot Pie $69 3) Our tables proximity to the pathway to the nightclub out back. Don't know if I can count how many times one of us got biffed in the head by some drunk hoochie-mama's purse. The table next to us had their bottle of wine knocked off its stand by some bimbo's swinging suitcase purse. Judging from the reaction of the distinguished gentleman sitting at the table, I don't think it was a cheap bottle. AND the restaurant didn't even replace it!!!! They freaking picked it up, said "doesn't look like much spilled", wiped off the top and set it back on the stand. The Ugly: 1) My $40+ Prime NY Steak with Kobe short rib. Quite possibly the worst pieces of steak I've ever (partially) eaten. Tasteless. Weirdly fatty mouth-feel. I couldn't even pawn it off on the guys at the table. The Kobe short rib tasted like my Mom's stew meat. (Sorry, Mom, but that's not a compliment.) Having visited seven of Mina's restaurants now in various cities, I have to say I'm done with the chain. The first two or three we have visited over the years in San Francisco and Vegas were really good. Subsequent openings at the St. Francis in SF (Michael Mina) and RN74 have disappointed. I think Mike's had his day in the sun.
