You know that video game machine that sits on the bar, that has a whole bunch of games including the one where you find five little differences between the almost identical photos of naked ladies? We know it simply as "the game." Well, I went into the Route the other day, and learned the hard way that they have taken "the game" away. The machine is still there, but has been stripped of erotic options. I'm done with this place.

If you want to love the music where you can just dance only to the deejay without judgment, Balance on Saturdays at King King is the place. This spot is a favorite stomping ground of mine for several reasons. First off, you can still get that relaxed vibe with friendly faces. Nothing too pretentious here and the dress code is very casual for night life (no shorts or sandals for fellas, easy right? And what guy would want to do that anyhow?!?!). Secondly, the crowd isn't as drugged out as Avalon or Vanguard-I don't see any light shows here. There is also a friendly dance off of housers where you can either watch take notes or take part in. Just make sure you know the dance circle etiquette of not hogging circle time or splashing drinks all over the place. There are ins and outs so that you can cool off or bum a smoke. Another reason why I frequent this venue is that they go until 4 am and they have a parking lot in the rear. If you like electronic music but want something a little dirty/funky, try King King on Saturdays. Kemal is the resident deejay (he starts bringing in the new stuff after 2am) but they do get good talent coming (Kaskade, Andy Caldwell, Jay-J, etc.) through thanks to Sue the promoter. I hear they throw a pretty good salsa night on Tuesdays, and they might still be running that cabaret show on Thursdays. Check their site. See ya there.

During the week (Sun-Thur) there is a $15 drink minimum, but no cover. The jazz is pretty good. The venue is small, but intimate and the sound is good. $12 for a Beefeater martini (and the olives are excellent) is fair. Sets at 9, 11 and 12.30. I avoid it on the weekends (big cover, and it's not really better than the weeknights) but during the week, it's a nice night out. Definitely a good date. I was there tonight, and they were recording a live CD, so the band was on their game, it was some spectacular music.
