by Toby Colo on This place doesn't even warrant my typical comprehensive review so all you need to know is that you should avoid this restaurant at all costs. Don't be impressed by the 2 Phantoms parked prominently in the parking lot, surrounded by the Ferarris, Porsches and BMWs. My four friends and I had a 9 p.m. reservation and were finally seated at 10:15 in the booth immediately adjacent to the front door and hostess table. Absolutely no apology for the delay at all. Strike One. We all had the seven course chef's tasting menu, and although the food was decent, each course was literally one small bite. In between several courses, the wait was as long as 40 minutes. Strike Two. The bill for seven bites of food and two vodka cocktails (w/ gratuity) came to $160.00. Strike Three. And to top it off, the scene there was stomach-turning, as the dining room was filled with wanna-be Hollywood types to the nth degree. I swear it was surreal and I lost four hours of my life that I'll never be able to recover. Had I known this place turns into a night club after dinner service, I never would've agreed to go. I grew up in L.A., but now live in S.F., Michael Mina's home town. Why he decided to partner with SBE and whoever else that is part of this venture leaves me scratching my head. This is a far cry from RN74 as well as his eponymous restaurant, and cannot be good for his reputation!
by Brice Baloy on Someone asked me recently what my favorite Atlanta restaurant was. Sadly, I couldn't come up with one that really stuck out. After Spice Market, however, I can now answer that question without hesitation. Drawn by the impending expiration of my Scoutmob coupon, I finally made it in with two friends. They start the experience with hot lemongrass scented washcloths. Then come crispy pappadums with tomato chutney. And although I'm not much of a drinker, several of their creative cocktails appealed to me, and I had to try one. I decided to splurge on the tasting menu (10 dishes), as well as a Passion Fruit Whiskey Fizz. The tasting menu was absolutely amazing. Every dish (except the asparagus with lotus root) was superb in flavor, presentation, and portion. The asparagus was decent, but a bit heavy on the sauce/salt. Service was just right, and the ambiance/decor was great (we came on a Wednesday evening, so it was quite relaxed). Can't wait to go back for more, even without the Scoutmob coupon :)
by Chris R. on Just returned from dinner at Ecco - as usual a great experience. We had the salami/garlic, smoked prosciutto "Peck" (which dominated) and some reggiano parm along with the tomato/asparagus salad. Great apps, great waiter drinks and wine. I was a little disappointed they got rid of the daily bruscetta although they offered to make us one, I did not take them up on it. We both had pasta which were awesome. I suppose I am knocking a star off because of the retooled menu, discontinuation of the bruscetta, and the fact that we sat next to a couple of complete Wonks who were loud as hell. Next time I will certainly request one of the two corner sofa tables which are guaranteed Wonk free; if it's date night request one.
